What to carry when you can't carry?
In the near future I will be out of the country for a few days, in cartel areas. Sonora Mexico. I won't be taking any firearms, but am considering a knife or even a sturdy wooden cane to fend off low level confrontations. Any ideas would be appreciated. Geno

A really fucking bright flashlight, a "tactical" pen, extra money to give away if you are robbed and don't want to fight. Photo copies of your documents, and a phone number of an English speaking lawyer.

The address and phone number of any US-friendly entity (US embassy first and foremost) near your location, along with the above. I would look into knife laws and carry what is legal, in addition to a three cell Elzetta or Surefire.

Decoy wallet with photocopy laminated of drivers license (they don't know the quality), plus one of those pretend credit cards in it and 20 or so dollars in assorted money. Make it look good to give up instead of real one.
Knife in absolute case of necessity. Wallet is not worth life. flashlight maybe for striking.

Great ideas. Thank you all. Already committed, going.
I'll research the knife laws a bit more and the decoy wallet is a great idea for anywhere!

Monkey fist keychain with the steel ball in the middle. I don't have one but looks like it would suck to be hit

Re: What to carry when you can't carry?
Made it back to good Ole USA yesterday. I found the people to be very accommodating. The type of poverty there is like nothing here in this country. That being the case, I met no one that complained about their situation. It disgusts me how the "takers" here conduct themselves. We had no trouble with cartel types. No problem with Mexican Army. (Just doing their job.) The local police was corrupt to the point of not even trying to hide their greed and lawlessness. Road blocks were set up with the target of stopping cars with gringos. Our driver said that sometimes they try to make gringos feel as if they have done something wrong and will try to take money or possessions. This is known as a mordida. I will also say that traffic signs and lights are merely decorative. Not even a suggestion!
