"What thread pitch is that...?" Open carry encounter

Post by kokopelli » Thu Jun 02, 2016 7:46 pm

I was downtown Tuesday, because I had to be; the only good thing about downtown anymore is the Dunkin Donuts at 4th and Liberty...

I walk in and at the very entrance is a 2-person table, right in front of the cashier/order taker. Sitting there, playing on a phone is a young 20 something- honestly he looked closer to 18, black male, in the 'typical' urban attire of baggy t-shirt, oversized shorts and flat-brimmed baseball hat.
Normally I would not have noticed any more about him than that, but one thing about him stuck out: he was open carrying. Awesome. Then I look closer. A Hi Point Compact. Mexican carry on his side right at 3 o'clock. :? but still, good for him for carrying, right?

He's probably not used to questions from professional white people, I'm betting, but I ask anyway. 'Hey- what round are you carrying in your Hi-Point?'

"nine millimeter"

'Ok, I see, but what ammo are you loaded with?'

"Blazer Brass" he says.

"Oh, well, you need to check out a good HD round, like Critical Defense or Hydra-Shocks", trying to help him a little...

the next thing he says floors me. I mean, I truly was trying to just educate this guy a little, but it seems he needs more help than I thought. He says:

"what thread pitch is that?"

'uh...it's 124 grain that you'd probably want'...assuming I knew what he meant. I hope.

Hopefully he looks up Hornady's websight on his phone...

Careful, he could have thrown the hi point at you.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Good reason to open carry. Takes way too long to unscrew it from concealment

Not knocking open carriers at all, I OC at times myself but a common observation I have made is that most of the OC'ers I see in public carry firearms that I wouldn't even consider taking as a gift.

You aren't helping him much. If you read the Hi-Point manual it clearly states in red letters. Full metal jacket only!

I've yet to meet a person open carrying who wasn't a complete moron.

The last one I encountered had a right handed holster on his left side. I'm not sure if he was attempting to use it as a cross draw or what. He had it in about the 9 o'clock position so it would have been very awkward to draw.

Seen 3 open carry yesterday in lagrange. One had a nice rig and looked pretty classy, told him he was printing real bad. One had a chain wallet and a chrome plated taurus 92, was about 150 pounds overweight. One was a old redneck looking dude with the uncle mikes cheapy, could not ID the handgun, it looked like some beresa crap.

What's wrong with Bersa?

I have no issues with the Bersa, and no real issues with him. Just stating that he's a moron in general.

I'll keep that in mind for the next time I have to shoot submerged targets. The breathing control for that kind of shooting is stupid hard.

I see people frequently open carrying in downtown Louisville. I do often when I'm at work only because the policy is too muddy to test concealed carry. Of the two negative encounters I've had lately, one I wasn't carrying a firearm although I did have a knife and the other encounter the individual wasn't the least bit concerned that I had a plainly visible firearm.
I support open carry wholeheartedly. I believe the only way to desensitize the antigun group is for them to really be aware that they are usually surrounded by guns. They just can't see them. That being said and maybe I'm a bit hypocritical, but I'm not a very confrontational person so outside of work I cc.
