Plumbing question

Post by Niceguy » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:44 pm

My year old (this week!) water supply line to my house is apparently fucking leaking AGAIN... Ground is wet outside near where it comes through the wall of my basement. It is 3/4" copper pipe sticking out of the wall joined to 1" (I think...) schedule 40 pvc. I'm assuming it's the joint because it's all new and the person that did it is a complete fucking idiot and has had to repair 2 different joints 4 times total already. I'm tired of dealing this fucking moron and thinking about doing this repair myself. It's a few feet underground, a foot or two from the foundation of my house. What are my options to join the two of these? Best and easiest that will be right and last... 3/4" copper pipe to 1" (I think. Haven't dug it up yet and can't remember.) schedule 40 pvc. I'm mechanically inclined but have ZERO handyman/plumbing experience other than here's a shovel, dig this wide, this deep from here to there. Get to diggin!

Dig it up and take some pics. Probably a very easy and cheap fix

I am 90% sure you can get a shark bite (press on fitting. No glue or soldering) for schedule 40 to copper. Probably cost you $12 and you might have to order it

Shark fittings are great. There are also wraps you can use to make joints stronger

I'm reading mixed reviews for using them as a permanent underground fix...

We use the shark things in the wall of our old house when we redid the diverter to the shower. MUCH easier than trying to solder anything and was and is holding up just fine.

I ran out of daylight and stopped digging last night...I'm probably right at the pipe. Hopefully can knock it out before the rain comes in tonight or first thing in the morning.

Pretty much... It's up against some woods so it's dark at just after 7:00. I don't get home until 6:20ish. By time I change and let the mutt out, I had about 20-30 min of daylight...That's my only real bitch about fall/winter...haha

Got it to the pipe and the water out of the hole, that will probably be filled with rain in the morning... Can't tell shit and decided I was over my head after talking to Tyler and called my uncle (2nd or 3rd generation plumbing Co owner) to give me a little bit of a learnin... I helped him a lot when I was middle school, early high school age after my dad passed away. By helping I mean being dropped off and told dig this wide, this deep, from here to here and I'll come get you for lunch...haha

When using shark bite/ gator bite fittings, even tho they may say that they are for under ground use I would still seal the whole area to make it water proof.
The key to the seal is an o-ring on each end that should already have some plumbers lube on it,(Vaseline). The old, Ounce of prevention, saying applies here. You wanna do your best to fix it for life. Usually it'll last 20 years if done right.

And water heaters do suck kinda.
Tip: if the bottom drain valve is clogged and won't drain, you can hook a hose to the cold water side and compressed air to the hot water side. The cold water side has a tube that goes to the bottom. The hot side is just a fitting mounted to the tank that draws water off the top.

Hope this helps some.

Being it's just a trickle, we decided to mess with it Mon because of the shit weather and he can't make it tomorrow. Been turning the water on and off when needed. Hopefully it won't be to bad of a mudhole to work in Mon. I have the hole covered but the rains blowing pretty bad so I'm pretty sure it will be full of water again tomorrow.

This is the 2nd repair in this spot in a few days shy of a year. In the 1100' of 1 year old water line, this makes I think 6 repairs total! Needless to say, if the cocksucker that did this job fell into a septic tank and couldn't swim, I would squeeze out every speck of piss and shit I had to help the chances of him drowning in it...
