Gun/barrel choices...

Post by Niceguy » Mon May 13, 2013 3:51 pm

I have my first can coming (Gemtek Alpine) and trying to decide on what I want for a pistol host. I bought a 10/22 with a threaded Volquartzen on it and now figuring out what I want for a pistol host. I have a 22/45 that shoots fantastic and thinking about a Tacsol barrel or whatever other options may be available. Other option is NGD... What does everyone think is my best choice.

I say go with NGD!

The tacsol barrels are pretty pricey so you might as well start with a new one

I knew that was coming! haha Any advice on guns? I like the Ruger Black Lite but hate that stupid loaded chamber thing in the barrel. I don't really want a small pistol like the SR22, P22, Mosquito or things like that. Maybe the M&P22. I would like something with a shorter better trigger like a Ruger Mark or Browning Buckmark though.

I have a 22/45 Lite and a P22 that you can borrow to see if you like either.

I'm an M&P fan so I had to go with the 22 to keep it in the family.

Cranky can do a great job on threading a MK II or MK III.

I am too and have been wanting one of these since before the can purchase. I love my M&P 9! Do the trigger kits (Apex or anyone else) work with the .22 also?

Definitely thought about this also. I also thought about picking up another factory barrel and having you thread it. No down time that way...haha

I've shot a few unthreaded P22's and they were okay. Does the lite feel much different than any other 22/45? I've not shot a lite but love my 22/45.

Is that the 4.5" barrel? I've been looking at them a lot. I've shot KYgundude's Paclite 22/45 but not sure of the length barrel it has. Sweet gun!

Another of my favorite hosts is my GSG 1911 22 (Sig 1911 22, same thing). GSG is also offering a .22 conversion slide kit for most 1911 pistols that works surprisingly well. I run mine on my AMT Hardballer short slide frame and it has run great. Needs to be pretty wet with lube during break in, but ther than that, I've been likin'it. I burn a ton of ammo in both of my GSG platforms, and like it a lot.

Contrary to popular belief, my SR22 pistol maks a fantastic host and is 2nd only to my GSG as my favorite.

The M&P 22 is a great host, and I really enjoy shooting it, but the trigger isn't great and there isn't much that can be done about it.

My raffle Mosquito makes a good host (now) after extensive dickin' with it to get it to run (an old and long story, if interested, ask, I won'type it all out again here). Unless you already have a Mosquito that you know runs, I would NOT recommend buying one.

My MK II's and my wife's FrankenRuger (MK II frame, MK III upper) custom target work great as suppressor hosts, and run like sewing machines, all of them. The only one not threaded is my 10.5" stainless target model. That means I have 6 total, not counting the big 'un, all of which are freakin' awesome hosts.

All 3 of my AR .22 uppers run great with a can, as well as my 10/22 in the Nordic frame (forerunner of Ruger's SR 22 rifle), plus a couple of other 10/22's with threaded barrels, they all love the can.

Any of these, plus any of my Glocks or Sigs with conversions that you'd like to try before you buy, just let me know, I'd be happy to oblige (provided you bring your own ammo, please).
