Need advice from bearded dragon experts

Post by drifter0069 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 10:26 pm

I rescued a bearded dragon today. The guy that had it lost his job and couldn't take care of it. So I got it free along with its 55 gallon aquarium. The question I have is, nails. He has a couple fingernails that are extremely long and are growing upwards. Can these be trimmed? Also, when I post a pic, can anyone guesstimate an age? I appreciate any help. This isn't my first reptile. I have ball pythons and leopard geckos. Just no experience with these guys.

He measures about 12" to the tip of his broken off tail.

Do you know if it is a male or female?

For the nails you can trim them with good clippers. Be careful not to get the blood vessel inside. I recommend upside down porcelain tiles at an angle used to get to their high spots. This will held keep their nails in check. They need a hard dry rock surface to wear them down as they always grow. Wood alone will not help them. I do this with all my babies with the tile at a 45 degree angle near the heat light. They have to scrape their nails to get up to the light. It's a great trade off.

If yours is a female I know a friend with several extra males and needs another good female to breed with.

I'm not sure how to tell the sex, but the guy said it was a male. But he wasn't taking real good care of it. The tile idea is awesome.

Not sure how old it is. Gonna do some research.
