New Projects For Me

I received both of these pistols today, a not quite matched pair of Colt's S70 .45's.

'79 Gold Cup National Match. Slightly modified/pimpified. Nice trigger job on it, and everything checks out on the function/safety test I did on it.

However, I'm the type of guy who prefers things to be in their original configuration more or less. As pretty as the grips and nickel/stainless parts are, they gotta go.

This sad sack is the second of the pair. '82 Government Model, the years and previous owners have not been kind. The sights have been changed, the slide was hacked out for a bomar unit, the barrel has been replaced with a WW2 Colt barrel (actually that's kind of a bonus cause I needed one).

Gold Cup with original flat serrated mainspring housing, and a different grip safety. Not correct, but I'm going to try it out before swapping the original hammer back on (I'm not great at fitting them). Similar to the one I put on my Springfield, it allows me to retain the commander-type hammer without using a beavertail. It also has a full length guide rod installed, which I'm going to leave for now.

Correct original barrel:

Original S70 bushing:

Back together, with original parts re-installed (grips and slide stop robbed from the other pistol for now):

Been going over the Gov't Model as well, its a bit of a beater. Hate that Bomar sight, afraid the whole slide is a write-off. Whoever installed these sights should be whipped and boo'd by their peers.

Also, barrel is a WW2 piece, so its not correct. I do need a correct barrel for one of my '43 Colts so its not a bad thing.

Aside from that, the pistol is in ok shape. This frame is going to be a donor for a .22 conversion until I find a good original slide and barrel. Put together, with an early post war conversion unit and a slightly shrunken set of post war Gov't Model grips. Even though its not really correct for anything (for the collectors), its still a pretty sexy pistol if you ask me! Even if its just a rimfire.

What the heck!? Did all the vintage Colt 1911's migrate North for the summer some time ago and roost in your backyard!?

No, but there has been a serious dry spell in finding the old ones so I figured I'd better start stocking up on the "new" ones!

Those bomar sights are bad. I don't blame you for changing them. They look like something from a rifle that was forced on it.

I like my bomars, but they look like crap and snag on everything.
