A brass case a shims cut out of a soda can works just as well If not better. Nothing beats headspace gauges The best is to measure all surfaces with Jo blocks and depth mics You have to pull barrels and lock bolt movement, mechanicly. I use small standard bench vises on my cooper style benches and 360 degree combination pipe/bench vises on my work benches and welding table. Two are large and one is a baby
