There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

So help me out here.
I lived in Indiana from '89-2000, rifles were illegal then.
When did they get legal to begin with???

Rifles that fire bottle-neck rounds were illegal but straight wall round (most pistol rounds) rifles were okay until now was my understanding.plumber_bob wrote:So help me out here.

Mrs. Bob and I were just discussing this and she said that she thinks she read that rifles are being phased out for hunting in KY too. Is that got any meat to it?

Re: Hunting deer with rifles now illegal on Indiana public l
A few years back the state passed new legislation that allowed SOME "bottlenecked" rifle cartridges. I believe almost anything that had bullet diameters of .243 and .308? Maybe it was .270 and .308, but it was SOMETHING and .308 diameter. This past year they passed new legislation that made it a range of calibers like most states, i.e. anything larger in diameter than x and smaller than y with a case length between A and B. That opened up a lot more calibers, BUT they also passed the whole no rifles on public land thing. So, far more calibers were allowed for hunting on private land, but NO rifles for public land. People were talking about it being a mistake, but mistake or not it's the way it is until it changed.

Even if it did i have a feeling it wouldnt last more than a year if they could get it passed.........SO MANY MORE deer would be hit on the roads. Not that we dont have thousands hit already. It would be carmageddon!plumber_bob wrote:Mrs. Bob and I were just discussing this and she said that she thinks she read that rifles are being phased out for hunting in KY too. Re: Hunting deer with rifles now illegal on Indiana public l
Im actually OK with them limiting the caliber on public land, its actually the one place they have the authority to do so. Public land hunting is a nightmare as it is.
On private land ammo type should be up to the land owner.
Indiana has stated this is a trial run and not a change that will remain without some investigation and data to show how effective it will be at getting the new generation hunting and culling the heard. I suspect they have the same overpopulation issues we have here in KY.

Does a shotgun with a slug count as a rifle? or is it still good.

Unless it's that law has changed too, you are expected to use slugs in a shotgun. Buckshot wasn't legal back then anyway.Vividia wrote:Does a shotgun with a slug count as a rifle? or is it still good.

Animal welfare group seeks to halt rifle rule in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- An animal welfare group has requested that a judge toss an emergency rule recently approved by Indiana's wildlife agency to allow rifle-hunting on state or federal property.
The Indianapolis Star reports that the Center for Wildlife Ethics filed their request with LaPorte Circuit Court Judge Thomas Alevizos on Thursday.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources issued the rule Nov. 3 as a way to fix what was described as a legislative mistake earlier this year that banned rifles in public forests.
The ethics group argues that the ban is a "clear legislative mandate."
A department spokesman says the agency believes it took appropriate action and stands by its decision.
Alevizos had not issued a ruling as of Friday morning.

Re: Hunting deer with rifles now illegal on Indiana public l
Actually, AR10 pistols and some AR15 pistols would be ok.
Legal handguns can be used to hunt deer during the firearms, reduction zone from Nov. 18-Jan. 31 (in zones where local ordinances allow the use of a firearm), and special antlerless seasons.
Handguns, other than muzzleloading handguns, must have a barrel at least 4 inches long and mustfire a bullet of .243-inch diameter or larger. The handgun cartridge case, without the bullet, must be at least 1.16 inches long. There is no maximum cartridge length for those used in handguns. Full metal-jacketed bullets are not permitted. The handgun must not be a rifle that has a barrel less than 18 inches. (A rifle with a barrel less than 18 inches is not considered a handgun.)
Handguns are not permitted for hunting on any military areas.
Some handgun cartridges that are legal for deer hunting include .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester Magnum, .35 Remington and .357 Herrett.
A new state law also legalizes a handgun that fires the 10mm Auto and 40 Smith & Wesson cartridge.
Some handgun cartridges that are illegal for deer hunting are .38 Special, .38 Smith and Wesson, .38 Colt New Police, .38/200, .38 Long Colt, .38 Super, .38 ACP, .38 Colt Auto, .45 ACP, .45 Automatic and .45 Auto Rim. All .25/.20, .32/.20 and .30 carbine ammunition is prohibited.
