New to smoking pork butt, need rub ideas
I just bought my first smoker, a Chargiller Kamado Cooker from Lowes. On sale for $249. Been looking at this unit for the past 1-2 years and finally decided to buy it. Put it together yesterday and ran it thru its first heat cycle to season the cooking grates burn off any oils and residues.
I just started grilling a few years ago and really enjoy it, but I have never smoked (low and slow) anything. I've never even used lump charcoal, so that will be a first also. I want to try to smoke a pork butt this coming weekend. I need ideas for a rub.
I'm thinking of starting with some Sweet Baby Rays Honey BBQ sauce, then using a combination of brown sugar, salt, pepper and a local spice mix (Primetime Rubolicious) for my rub.
Any other rub ideas out there?? Be gentle, I'm a newbie to this type of cooking.

Try a 8+3+1+1 Rub. There are tons of them out there.

"8+3+1+1 Rub"
8 parts sugar (many different kinds, can use plain white, brown, turbinado, granulated honey, granulated molasses, maple sugar, etc.)
3 parts salt (smoked salt, fine salt, course kosher salt, regular old table salt)
1 part pepper powder (Chili powder, hot paprika, sweet paprika, smoked paprika, a dozen other kinds of paprika, jalapeno powder)
1 part spice mix (WHATEVER YOU WANT)
Possible spice mix ingredients:
black pepper
white pepper
ginger
ground mustard
cayenne
jalapeno powder
Old Bay
thyme
cumin
oregano
nutmeg
onion powder
garlic powder
Simple spice mix - equal parts:
onion powder

Really liking the 8-3-1-1 system. Heading to the grocery on Friday for some brown sugar, ribs and a pork butt.
Would love to hit the grocery on Thursday but mandatory overtime is kicking my butt, plus I've strained a muscle in my upper back that is causing quite a bit of pain. I'm scheduled for a session with a massage therapist on Friday morning. I strained the same muscle group about 1.5 years ago and she really helped so hopefully this session that I'll be close to pain free. Wish me luck!!
Going to try to experiment with grill/smoker temperature on Friday afternoon. Need to learn how to light the lump charcoal so am buying some of the Weber Firestarter cubes. Hoping to be able to achieve and maintain a 250-275 temp. Plans are to try to smoke some ribs first and then either Sat. or Sun. try smoking my first pork shoulder/butt.

On pork butt I use rub, cook it using charcoal & hickory chunks. Let it get a good smoke coating for a couple hours then I wrap it in foil to seal in the juices & cook it for another 8 to 12 hrs just using charcoal until fall apart tender.
Costco has huge pork shoulders for $1.89 a lb normally. About twice the size Kroger sells. Also have good looking brisket for a decent price.

Pork butt and brisket temp is key. Got to high it will dry out and be tuff go to lower it will never cook. Ribs are little more forgiving. Also cook quicker.

I use a memphis style rub on pork, basicly its sugar, paprika, and salt based.
I smoke at 225-250 , until meat reaches 140, then I put it in a foil pan and cover. I cook it from there in my oven at 230 until the meat reaches 205. Should shake apart with enough juice to keep it sloppy moist.
