M11 .380 Question

Post by Smithengineered » Thu Aug 28, 2014 7:38 pm

This time next year I will be buying a M11 .380. I'm looking for the very small frame .380 like this one pictured.

Looking around I've ran across some M11's that are .380, but are stamped 9mm like this

Ruben Mendoila's description on his web page says that these are the "smaller frame" guns. My question is are these the same size as the 9MM version and were just chambered in .380 or did RPB make some that were intended to be 9MM that were going to be the super small frame and it just fell thru? Any info is appreciated!

Look at that stamp closely, it says 9mm Auto K
The K stands for Kurz which is German for short
9mm Kurz is another name for 380 which goes by many names
.380 Auto
9mm Browning
9mm Corto
9mm Kurz
9mm Short
9×17mm
9 mm Browning Court

The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

All of the 380 guns are the small frame. I have had probably five of them. Including a super rare semi open bolt carbine. I have a book titled "The MAC Man" that is all about Gordon Ingram and the entire MAC story. It's very entertaining and should be considered. According to the book, they were stamped 9mm AUTO in the very early stages of manufacturing. There was confusion because this new AUTO cartridge was different than the PARABELLUM / LUGER cartridge. They then started stamping them "K" to indicate Kurz to clarify that it was not the standard 9 mm cartridge. They finally went with .380 to further eliminate any more confusion. They started building this smaller gun/caliber for ease of suppression. Some of the guns you see are milled where the caliber designation is and stamped 380. This was due to them being accidentally stamped 308 instead. Most assume they had the 9mm designation milled away but that is not true.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Guess that explains why the K looks like it was put on as an afterthought

Also to add, the 9mm guns are the same as the 45. I just recently sold a pretty rare Jersey Arms Works MAC. That's another story...

Thanks for the info Rex! I'll look into getting that book. I figure it's one of the few MG's I can actually afford and I'd like to grab one before they go up in price any more.

I totally understand your desire, but would counsel against getting the .380 version, simply because .380 is so hard to come by and bloody expensive, compared to 9mm P. Unless you have a progressive press and a shit ton of brass & bullets to load your own, you'll go broke trying to feed it for a single happy switch session.

While it's not FA, my 30+ year old Cobray M11/9 is a great little pistol, especially with the Bowers CAC-9 can on it. The ones with the happy switch are an absolute giggle-fest!

380 ammo is a bit better to get when ordered in bulk from some of the online people. Aim has Wolf for $13.95 and Gecko for 15.95. Wolf 9mm is $10.95.
One of the 380 MACs I had was when 380 ammo was absolutely unobtainable several years ago if you remember. I dumped that little gun for a little of nothing. I kick myself when I think about it.

I do remember that. It's one of the reasons I still actively reload. As it is, I wish I could reload .22lr.

I have seen some .380 models going for around $4300-4500 on GB.

Lotus had a 9mm with can for $4600 a couple months ago if I remember correctly.

Lol good to know. I just remember seeing a video a while back from Hickok45 on YouTube with a MAC and he was having issues with it using steel case. I have no problem using steel case ammo.
