Week 6/Knotty Line

Post by son of liberty » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:20 am

Knotty Line

You will need a length of cord
A short stick or other round object

Knots are as essential to modern civilization as fire. The value of knowing how to tie knots to the bushcrafter is endless, I could go on about the value of knots but im sure that you all are already aware.

The Knotty line is our rosseta stone for knots, every time we learn a new knot we add it to our knotty line. Doing this we always have a key a map of the knot construction that we can reference if our memory fails, as well the act of constructing the knots helps us commit to memory the construction of the knot.

For the how to of this challenge we will outsource that to a web sight that shows the knot construction , as well everyone is welcome to add knots to there knotty line that might not be on or short list. The knots on the short list should cover most bushcrafters needs. How you link these knots is up to you and where you place the knots on the cord is up to you.

Now yer up in my wheelhouse, SoL! Been working on some decorative cord tech for a few months, now. I'll have a few tutorial links up later tonight...

... or at least a couple pics.

Okay. Here's what I've been working on in recent weeks. A playing card case for my Wilderness Survival cards and a watch band in black with orange stripes. Not perfect, by any means, but it's a start. Once again I skipped ahead of the basics and tackled more advanced stuff. Need to backtrack a bit and make a knotty line for the go-bag.

I'll hit this project up on the weekend after I get back from Florida!

Meanwhile, Louisville's One Stop Knife Shop always has 550 cord in stock (retail pricing, but it washes out even when you consider shipping costs if you buy online.)

Okay, back from Florida, here's what I've got.

In tac orange - clove hitch, sheet bend, bowline, Prusik, and the figure 8 could use some more practice. That's a new one on me.

And I'm a long-time fan of the Navy half hitch! Used a repeating series to refinish the old bed lamp.

And for the masochists out there, here's how you tie a military rope seat for rappelling. (Paris Island, '99, I wouldn't exactly call this a "fun" trick to learn. But you might need it one day.)
