New Challenge/ The Knife Feathered Stick

Post by Kadnine » Mon May 06, 2013 12:35 pm

Okay, we've experimented with various tinders, spark tools, and tinder bundles. How do you keep the fire going once yer bundle catches a flame?

One tried and true method is to prepare a "feather stick" beforehand. Shave a twig or small stick down two or mor sides, to increase surface area, and, in case of wet kindling, dry out and catch light faster using the heat and flame of yer tindle bundle.

When working with dry kindling sticks, you can get away with a relatively coarse feathering:

In wet or windy conditions, the finer the feather needs to be in order to be effective kindling:

Good luck! Looking forward to seeing what you guys can come up with, and if yer still working on a tinder bundle, that thread is here.

Impromptu bushcraft in the parking lot at lunch. I would try to light it but the boss man might get mad.

Interesting, nemo. See you've feathered all sides, whereas I usually only 2. That would definitely increase the surface area nicely. I'll have to try that.

Nice Job Nemo, you can tell good feathers by how tight they roll up and yours are good feathers!

I've always made the feather stick to look like a literal feather. But I can imediately see the advantages of going for maximum curl. Will try the nemo method next month on our Spring camping trip!

That's the way we were taught how to make one in the scouts, works even with wet wood ( wood drys quickly ). We had to make fire or eat our food cold, everybody had cold hotdogs on friction fire night.

While I'm nowhere *near* nemo's mastery, this thread is all about the learning curve right?

Ten strikes, with wet wood and a bit of steel wool. I'm a proud Papa!
