As Coach stated barrel wear from rapid firing and the bullet construction must've factored in.
If you slow fired or did not pound on your rifle shoot the steel.
As the AR system allows easier barrel changing. Shoot steel or brass wear out your barrel with either change it.
Rifle especially AR/AK are made for use not pretty objects.

What I really got from that article is that the metal of the casing doesn't matter much. What matters is that the bullets are constructed with a softer jacket and the powder is of decent quality.

Thats funny, I have a post sample 10" M16 that I shoot exclusively Wolf/Tula (more bang for the buck) with very little semi auto fire that is still as accurate as the day I got it? Pretty close to 8,000 rds through it. Pretty sure it still has rifling in it?
I didnt know Wolf had steel/copper jacketed bullets either?

Skeptic here.

Has the barrel been gaged with a bore gauge and the throat gauge??

6 to 10k rounds huh? Well that means regardless of what i shoot out of it my barrel should last the next 50 years considering I NEVER GET TO GO SHOOT ANYMORE!!!!! In case you didnt know....I need some range time!

...."the Wolf and Brown Bear barrels were subjected to the same rates of fire and were completely “shot out” by 6,000 rounds.

At the end of the test, the chrome lining of the Wolf and Brown Bear barrels was almost gone from the throat forward, and the barrels had effectively become smoothbores, with the rifling near the muzzles acting only as a mild suggestion on the projectiles."

With this statement, I call complete bullshit on this theory. I m not a scientist but I have shot plenty of rounds of shitty ammo through a bunch of guns and this is far from the truth in my experience. If that was the truth, all those AKs in the middle east and the entire Russian Army would not be able to hit anything? Or, if their barrells are that good and made of some space age materials that can hold up, we should be looking into it. Looking at their prices on 223/556, they dont know what they are talking about anyway.

Wear to a barrel does not mean it will not shoot .
It means it has wear to a gauge and there fore is either out of spec or close.

Can not compare a chrome lined -AK to a AR
AK are chrome lined to reduce the wear the barrel.
I would not be surprised if the chrome on a AK is not hard chrome.
I know for a fact that high speed lathe tool will wear when crowning a AK and the same cutter has zero problems with a chrome lined AR barrel

You gotta keep in mind these tests were done in a short amount of time. With normal uses even bimetal jacket bullets will make barrels last much longer.

On a side note I’ve been shooting the new range safe brass jacketed steel case Tula ammo in my main AR and I love it. Barely costs more that the regular bimetal jacket steel case without any of the barrel life downfalls. More accurate too. The boat tail bullets are easily as accurate as any FMJ .223/5/56 I’ve ever shot. I get 2-3” groups with my rifle.

Reviving the dead thread.

I use mostly steel when I can. A magnet makes easy cleanups then.

Steel case is the best. Even if it eats your barrel you could buy two replacements with the money saved.
