I found this Colt for sale, the price is right but I'm looking for some input. Any opinions on quality? I like fixed carry handle uppers so this one kinda got my attention. I know the stock isn't original but waiting on details about the rest.

A 16" barrel with carbine length gas isn't the best (assuming the gas port isn't on the small side to accommodate), but also isn't the end of the world. I'd put an H2 or even H3 buffer in it. In my experience it makes an appreciable felt difference.

It's an older Colt. Not much to be said. It should be good. If the price is right and it has the features you want, buy buy buy.

Here's another option, a 6920. The Sporter is $995, the 6920 is $1175 (CAD).

Not sure if I should just find a lower and put my 10.5" Colt back together......

6920, for a $200 difference it's worth the upgrade. Newer parts, flat top upper receiver, and etc. That would be my vote all day.

Also some of the older colts have different size trigger pin holes, blocks that don't allow some more modern triggers like the echo and the bolt carrier has that back bottom cut off where it would actuate a full auto sear. Id go with the 6920. If I had $1175 to spend on a AR right now I'd go with a BCM for just a little more or spikes tactical for less.

FYI the army isn't even buying anymore colts they've switched to FN full autos that are ambi. At least that's what I had in basic and was told it's going army wide eventually.

yes it had a ambi safety on it and was a FN in full auto instead of burst and I was the second person to ever use it they were brand new the previous cycle before mine.

The Spikes and BCM aren't really on my radar, both I'm looking at are used. Prices are relative I guess, in Canada we pay a premium because of importing/dollar exchange/availability.

I like the nostalgia thing with a fixed carry handle, but DD makes a good point. The 6920 would be more versatile with the removeable handle. Plus the twist being 1:7 would make it more friendly for various ammo. Although since I have a HUGE stockpile of 55 gr that may be irrelevant.

Decisions. This is mostly a stop gap measure as my 10.5 Colt is down right now for lack of a lower.

The owner of the Lightweight dropped the tax from the price so I saved 100 bucks. Went for it, hope it turns out to be a good buy. Probably won't get it til next week.

In case anyone's interested in an update:

turns out (as suggested by gk) its got the sear block but the pins seem to be standard size so that's ok. Other than the front pivot which is still the oversized Colt version.





Just need to cut out the block and then its more versatile if I ever decide to/need to change any parts. It also has the cut down carrier to accommodate the block, not the end of the world. It does have a 1/7 barrel, bonus that I didn't know until I got it in my hands.

I replaced the extension tube and stock with a repro 2 position and aluminum stock, mostly because I just prefer it. As you can see its commercial dimension but whatever.



I have this old red dot that came with a bunch of parts I bought so for shits I threw it on. Seems to fit the vintage.....doubt it'll stay on but I'll try it out.

Looking back on it there's a lot of stuff I didn't know until y'all pointed out differences and I then researched. If I had listened and done the research BEFORE, I may have gone with the 6920. Hopefully it is a decent shooter, haven't had time to get out with it and its been bitter cold lately anyway.

I finally got out to shoot a week or so ago and I broke it. First time out with it and I put about 40 rds downrange at 100 yds. Repro 2 position buffer tube let me down. Stock collapsed when I fired, muzzle went up and my shot went over the berm (right over the police range beyond me). Got a good smack on the face when it happened.

I tried one more shot, no problem. One more, stock collapsed again. Took it off, saw the stock pin had sheared material off the buffer tube. After this, a light slap on the butt collapsed the stock.



Turns out the pin was only engaging about 1/16". I've since ordered a replacement buffer tube, a like new surplus C8 2 position piece I found. No more unknown repro parts for me, for all I know it might have been an airsoft stock.

Put a CTR stock on it today just to get it working again and my son and I went to the range. Pretty wet but still had a good time. The 16" worked great, he put about 300 rds through it. I put about the same through my 10.5" but it seemed a bit fussier and I had a few ftf issues.
Using LAR mags as rifle mags have a 5 rd limit here....

I need to get out shooting again. Looks like you and your son had a good time
