Recommendations for buffer tube kits

Post by BK Meyers » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:04 pm

I am thinking of buying 2-3 buffer tube kits (carbine type, buffer tube, spring, buffer, end plate and castle nut). I've got a couple of stripped lowers, the needed lpk's and 3 different butt stocks but do not have the buffer tube kits that I would need to make complete lower builds.

I've checked out Anderson, PSA, BCM, Spikes, and DSA (all thru either Anderson, PSA or AimSurplus). Prices range from $30 (PSA) to $70 (Spikes but with s/s spring and T2 buffer).

Most of the tubes seem to made from 7075 aluminum (when in the description) with the DSA being the only one listed as being from 6061 aluminum. A quick search shows the 7075 to be the stronger of the two so the DSA is out.

Not looking to build right now, just wanting to have on hand.

The PSA unit is attractive due to price. Anyone have any other recommendations or preferences??

Thanks,
BK

I have used many of the $30 units. Never had a problem. Most of cheap one are not a mil spec tubes so when go to change the stock it might be a problem. The magpul stock are mostly mil spec the commercial ones are a little harder to find.

Also used a $400 stock on the sbr so pick what you like.

V seven makes a steel one and claims it strongest on the market.

Andersons fron Adayton is all I use. I like that they come with a nice screw cap keeping it all together until use

I've got a couple of these Anderson LBK's on hand and have done 2 lower builds using the same kit. If I didn't already have these stocks and lpk's then the Anderson LBK's would be my choice. Very nice kit for the price.

I just picked up a Hogue kit that included mil spec buffer tube, spring, buffer, end plate, castle nut, and over-molded stock. for $99. I choose Hogue over Magpul just because Ive had Magpul on every AR up to now and wanted to try something different. It appears to me to be the same quality level as Magpul items, it has zero play between the butt stock and tube.

Since starting this thread some very good ideas have come thru. It may be better for me to sell a couple of my existing buttstocks (a Magpul CTS and a CAA unit) and put those funds towards a complete kit like you mention here. I recently found one from UTG that I think is going to work put pretty well. The stock is their version of the STR/Sopmod and feels good. Plus it and the kit are listed as being USA made so that's a plus.
