What kind of rail?

Post by kyswede » Sat Feb 28, 2015 9:02 pm

I am building a 300 BLK pistol and need some advice about a rail. I am using a 8" barrel. Will a rail clamp onto the barrel nut or do I use the delta ring? How about the front of the rail? Do I need to install a handguard cap before installing the gas block? Here is a pic of what I have now. The barrel nut is just hand tight now.

All depends on what you are looking for. If it's free float you won't need anything on the front. Some free floats mount over the stock barrel nut like you have there. Others come with proprietary barrel nuts that you have to use instead. Options are nearly limitless these days. What is your budget?

From the rear of the barrel nut to the shoulder on the barrel is 4 1/4".

I am wanting to use an adjustable gas block. The adjusting screw is on the side but the locking screw is on the rear. This could be a problem. As for budget, I have no idea.

Yeah...I'm not real sure about the adjustable gas block. I don't have any experience with those. From the sound of it I'm not sure what your best bet would be. I was going to suggest something like this:

http://www.samson-mfg.com/mm5/merchant. ... _Code=AR15

They make a 7" and a 7.6" and both clamp over your existing barrel nut. But if you are going to need access to your gas block you're gonna need something a lot shorter

Yankee hill makes a keymod handguard that's just over 4", but I think it uses a proprietary barrel nut

Thanks for the link. The adj. gas block is an option at this time, so I may just use a lo-profile block. The only rail I have ever used was a 2 pc. 7" rail that replaced carbine handguards. I have a lot to learn.

I have a 7" Samson evolution rail on my pistol. Installing and removing it is mind boggling.

The centurion C4 rail clamps over the standard barrel nut too. Little more pricey though. Lots of options.

There should be a 2 pc rail that would probably work well for you needs, but I can't remember who makes it.

Just find one that you like and can afford , you will be able to mount the low profile gas block before you slip the tube over it and the screw on the side of the block can be reached by drilling a small hole in the side of the rail handguard, that is if it dont have a spot already able to fit the screw. I would run as long a rail as you can to aid it hand placment and keeping the hot ass barrel off of skin.

not sure what you price range is but you may wanna check out SLR Rifleworks. They've got great products both in rails and gas blocks. their rails use a special barrel nut that it comes with and they have lo pro gas block that are adjusted from the muzzle end.

Planning on running a can under the handguard? Do you want a modular rail or a quad rail? It all comes down to what you want it to look like. Pic is my seekins mscr v2 12" rail and my hta 7.62 can. Mocked up where my 8" 300blk barrel would be. Ignore vert grip and handstop was a joke.

So far I have looked on YHM, Troy, MI, Seekins, Samson, SLR and Primary Arms websites. Leaning toward a Troy Bravo, Vtac Alpha, or MRF 7-7.2" rail. Still have a few more places to check. I will be running a suppressor later, but not under rail.

Test fired my pistol today. Ran 60 rounds of Rem. 120 grain supersonic ammo without a hiccup. Used 2 new 10 round Pmags, one would not lock bolt open after last round. Very impressed with the pistol so far. Still need a rail and a flash hider. Possible SBR in the future.

If you watch the original Escape from New York, thats what they did to modify the AR15's to look new, took the handguards off.

Since I plan to get a suppressor for this, I may wait until I decide which suppressor I want, then buy a rail. In the meantime I am thinking about SBRing a different lower for this and my 10.5" barreled 5.56 AR pistol.
