Problems with certain .22lr ammo
The recent WTB 22lr ammo got me thinking. Seems I keep seeing posts (on other sites) where people have problems with a certain brand of 22lr ammo (the name that generally comes up is Remington).
I'd be interested to know if any of you have had problems with any certain brand(s) of 22lr ammo and what those problems were. If possible please list what firearm the ammo was being used in.
As an example, the owners manual for my Marlin 795 does not recommend using Remington ammo. I do remember having a couple of stove pipes but I do not have the data to show what I was using. I have also experienced some failure-to-fire in a High Standard revolver but I attributed them to a weak/old firing pin spring.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I know Remington for awhile was using a wax coating that would jam semi-auto's.
I have been using it in my Ruger 10/22's and Browning Buckmark with no problems in the last two years.

Winchester 22lr has always been junk when I have used it. I have never had issues with remington, federal or CCI. Federal is my first choice though

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I've used a lot of remington, cci and federal 22lr ammo. I recently got a bulk box of wolf brand but I haven't tried it yet. I shoot a remington 597 and a Buckmark pistol. It's all been pretty solid.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
The most problematic I have run across the last couple of years has definitely been Winchester, especially the bulk packs. Every semi-auto I have, pistol or rifle, short strokes as it simply does not have a strong enough or consistant enough recoil pulse.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
In the past year I've used Win, CCI (standard, high velocity, blazer, stingers), Fed (2 or 3 different types), Aguila in 3 different grains, Rem (2 different types). I've used them in a 2 different stock 10/22's, 1 very modified 10/22, 2 different 22/45's (both have mods, 1 Paclite), Browning Challenger III, Colt 1911-22, 2 different Savage Marks and a Marlin 39a. Only ammo issue I had with any was 1 10/22, 1 22/45 and the Challenger didn't like eject the Aguila (other than the super high velocity) or the Rem when they were dirty but ran fine when they were clean. Win was hit or miss in all the semi-autos but my old 1978 bone stock 10/22, it cycles pretty much anything. The lever and bolt guns love it all...

I have trouble with Winchester also, although my 795 loved the Winchester HV stuff, any Federal had issues in that rifle. I'm pretty exclusive to CCI/Blazer now because it works in everything I've ever had. Recently tried some of the Rem Golden Bullet marked "new & improved" and not one issue in 4 pistols and 2 rifles.

The Wolf 22LR ammo has been my most reliable, most consistently accurate 22LR to date. I used Eley 22LR last Appleseed and had great results with that too. Would put the Wolf on par with it.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I agree with the new & improved Rem. With the old Rem ammo my old 10/22 and the browning both hated it. They are the only ones I've used the Rem ammo from years ago in.jmeister wrote:I have trouble with Winchester also, although my 795 loved the Winchester HV stuff, any Federal had issues in that rifle. Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I was looking at what ammo I had on backorder and saw that I had a few thousand rounds of Win M-22 in a black box. I've never shot any of it before, I've never even seen it on the shelf anywhere. Is it worth a shit? Is it better than the 333/555 bulk Win I hope?

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
The last box of Remington .22 ammo I shot without experiencing any problems had a 39 cent price sticker on it...from JC Penney.
Seriously. No llama.
95+% of my .22 stash consists of CCI MiniMags, as it seems to work well in just about anything. I've had reasonably good luck with Federal bulk as well.

This, but with Blazer 22. Gobs of wax my 22/45 didn't appreciate.Toddstang wrote:I know Remington for awhile was using a wax coating that would jam semi-auto's.

Remington bulk 22 is dirty as hell. After shooting 100 rounds my fingers are black from the stuff. I've also noticed the bullets are often loose and you can wiggle them. That being said, it always fired fine.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I've noticed the waxy film on the Blazer but never had an issue out of any of my guns, including 2 different 22/45's. My guns don't get cleaned regular AT ALL either...hahaKYgundude wrote:This, but with Blazer 22. I noticed the loose bullets in the Rem I have also, not just a little either. Very loose... Seem to function fine though of all my .22's as well.

Go to arms list and look at it. It's the stuff that some guys think is worth quadruple what they paid for it. Also it is apparently a business to sell it for unemployed guys. I've heard instead of for recreational shooting it is some sort of inflated currency aimed at hurting the shooting sports foundations, apple seeds, and Boy Scouts.kokopelli wrote:what is this ...'22' you speak of?

Remington bulk runs horrible in my Remington 597 and the smith and Wesson 22a I had. Everything else ran fine.

Re: Problems with certain .22lr ammo
I have a couple bricks of Remington thunderbolt. Anything semi-auto in my collection hates about every other round. I have a 6" 10 shot S&W 617 revolver, and thought the remington would be fine in it, but it tends to keyhole, which surprised me. I use it in my pump 22s to good effect, though. The longer barrel stabilizes it better.
Other than that, CCI has been my favorite, and the federal bulk packs. Everything likes these.
