9mm defense ammo options
So, I've recently started cc a lot more in the last couple months. I bought my shield a few weeks back and outfitted it with the full apex system (enhancement and trigger package). I just ordered one of the alien gear concealments holsters and now I need some options of what ammo to carry. I've not shot much 9mm in the likes of defense rounds so I don't know what's out there and what's popular.
If you could, give me some ideas of what's worth trying, what your using and why.
Best places to pick up defense ammo because I've not seen it on the shelf?

Re: 9mm defense ammo options
Walmart had some 9mm HST rounds. Is that new hydroshock packaging? It was like 24.95 for a box of 20 I believe.

Gotcha. What's the difference in grain? Tbh, I've always bought ball ammo and at the same time got whatever was cheaper. Lol

With a 3 inch barrel you need to pick a round that's gonna expand reliably through denim. Not to mention it is winter so heavier clothing is going to need penitrated. Bonded ammo is going to retain weight and penitrate deeper than regular jacketed.
With 3 inch barrel I'd stay +p whatever you do. Gold Dots come in a short barrel version.

Dunno what you consider new, I've been carrying HST for about 8 yrs now in 9mm & 45ACPCoach wrote:The HST is a new design which is, according to reports, better than the older Hydrashok. I dont buy it. Hydrashok is just fine.

Re: 9mm defense ammo options
The guy in the video I posted is testing a whole bunch of 9mm rounds to see which is best for 3" barrel. Check out his other vids to see what is performing well and what is not.

You could make it a poll option? FWIW I carry with TAP, Ball, TAP, ball etc.

Re: 9mm defense ammo options
I watched the video you posted. I've actually watched a few of his other videos where he talks about different defense rounds. I'm gonna go today to pick something up. I'm think the critical defense, and hydroshoks. Not sure of grain yet though. Not so sure about the specific differences.ChopperDoc wrote:The guy in the video I posted is testing a whole bunch of 9mm rounds to see which is best for 3" barrel. Re: 9mm defense ammo options
The heavy grains penitrate deeper due to more inertia and also due to less velocity and slower mushrooming.
The lighter grains are faster and react more violently and sometimes penitrate either less or wayyy less due to over expansion.

That generalization just is not true anymore. The video I posted is a perfect example of this. modern bullet tech is making things better all the time and there are some really good 115g bullets that are performing very well out of a 3" gun.
Hydrashocks typically do okay, but have never been great in smaller guns. Lots of other options with newer technology.

Re: 9mm defense ammo options
I suppose the video is being interpreted differently by me. The rounds he tested all were deeper than the 12 inch fbi minimum but only barely so. One was right on the line. I look for rounds that are just under the 18 inch maximum. And of course it is a pretty broad general statement but it is true that if you shoot a round out of a short barrel that isn't designed for it it will over penitrate and not expand.
