I have a bunch of 22/45 mags that develop rust on them very quick, about a week. Some faster than others. None of my other mags or guns in the same area rust like these. Any ideas how to keep them from rusting so fast? If I lube them they gum up from shooting. Any thoughts on baking froglube on them and then a quick soap and water rinse to remove excess from the insides? They function fine when I clean them and leave them dry but rust really fast. I guess I use them enough to wear the coating on them off. Just a guess. These two were spotless about a week ago.

Honestly I've never had a problem with mine rusting that quick and some of them are worn to bare metal. Only thing that comes to mind is Big D's super lube. I lube AR parts with it. Let it soak a few hours then dry. It will not be oily or sticky, but it protects great. Brake parts cleaner doesn't even take it off. Found that out after trying to get paint to stick to an upper that had been soaked in it

This first and foremost but if they don't please let us know and I would strip to bare metal and then ceracote them.

Didn't think of that. I'll definitely start there. They are getting some inside also because when I can see it on the outside they start getting a little gritty when loading. Out of over a dozen I have, maybe half are like that. The 2 in the pic are the worst.

I own 6 22/45 mags, all are 5 years old and cleaned frequently. No rust on mine. What did you use to clean?

CLP, brake cleaner (3M, CRC), soap and water. Most recently sonic cleaner with 3-4 drops of Dawn. All have been cleaned at the same time with the same stuff, only around half are like that.

The mix of these have probably shot over 30,000 rounds in the last 2-3 years.

May sound silly but I would use the Gear -kote by KG Ind. , instead of cerakote.

Gearkote is a dry lubrication film that is sprayed on and baked.

Gunkote is a Teflon/moly-disulfid that is a gun coating.

Both made by KG IND.

Now that sounds like some good stuff. Don't know how I never heard of it. I can think of a few uses for it

Just to jump in this thread I have a pair of magazines for my MK 2 that I have the same problem with.
