Drill bit + a drill motor = FUBAR
I broke a drill bit off when drilling the gas port on my AR barrel. I need the gas port drilled/broken bit removed. Should be a relatively easy job, I just dont have the right tools. I have been told an EDM is the best tool for this but I cant find a shop in the Louisville area that has one. Im sure a drill press with the right bit can do it too. $40 cash for anyone that can fix my gas port.
thanks

Who needs an EDM? My plasma cutter will take it out.

Well good for you easy 40.00 in it.
I replyed to his ad
Mentioned that 40.00 is the price of a carbide drill bit.
He responed with it is a carbide bit.
So you try to drill out a precision data point with a fragile but hard bit and then break it off.
He asked if I was a gunsmith
I told him his barrel was Fucked FUBAR
He did not reply:-/

So the dude's barrel really is screwed? I have no knowledge of this stuff but the barrel wall thickness isn't very thick so how could the broken bit be that stuck???

The drill bit is broke off in the gas port is the hardest metal twist drill made.justang1997 wrote:So the dude's barrel really is screwed? I have no knowledge of this stuff but the barrel wall thickness isn't very thick so how could the broken bit be that stuck???
It is very brittle.
Barrel are soft steel, a regular twist drill works quite well.
I use carbide to drill out high speed steel taps and drill.
You can burn it out with a EDM machine not for 40.00 and it is not so easy.
The dude has no clue.
If he took it to a gunsmith , the smith could open up the hole for 30.00 and reassemble the upper.

So the guy emails this morning and said it may not be carbide
So I replied he may have confused, carbide with cobalt.
I told him to get hold of a engine rebuilding machine shop and ask if they had a tap zapper.
