New Frontier poly lower and Chiappa 22 LR upper

Post by kyswede » Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:52 pm

My 2 sons, SIL and I shot 300 rounds through my 22LR AR today. The gun had only been fired 50 rounds previously. We used Remington Thunderbolt ammo. After about 200 rounds, the charging handle was getting sluggish, so I put some Hoppe's #9 oil on the bolt. The last 50 rounds or so, we had several stovepipes, a few failures to feed, so I figured it needed to be cleaned. After supper, I sat down to clean it and my AR cleaning rod would not go through the barrel. There was a buildup of lead just in front of the chamber. My 17 caliber cleaning rod would barely go through. I pushed my AR cleaning rod alone through from the muzzle, hitting the rod with the palm of my hand. A big chunk of lead fell out. Using a 22 cal. bronze brush got a few more pieces of lead out. I finally got the bore nice and clean. Here is a pic of the lead, with a dime for comparison. No more Thunderbolt ammo for my AR. I will try plated bullets and see how they work.

Wow. I always shoot a mag of .223 (or 5.56) after using a .22 kit in my .223 upper. You are making me rethink that.

It's worth doing a barrel check first...

I had this happen to me in my Ruger Lite.....I didn't think it was an ammo issue until I seen this post....rethinking that now....i thought it had something to do with suppressor and barrel getting dirty....

I believe he has a dedicated 22 upper not just a kit.

I had a M&P 15/22 do this same thing at the last Carrolton Appleseed. The bullets started key holing. He was shooting Winchester Wildcat ammo. Don't see this very often but it does happen from time to time. Find a brand of ammo that works in your .22 and stick with it.

In the FWIW department, i bought a M&P 15-22 when Lotus had their big sale.

In the manual they posted ammo that tested well in the gun:

CCI standard velocity
CCI mini-mag
Federal American Eagle
Federal Gameshok
Aguila Super Extra Std Velocity
Aguila Super Extra High Velocity
Winchester Super-X High Velocity

THey also posted ammo that did NOT test well

Remington Golden Bullet
Remington Target 22
Remington Thunderbolt
WInchester Wildcat
Any and All Subsonic brands and types

I know, I know, some of you may find reading the manual a wuss move, but occasionally I find interesting information therein. Having said that, I ran some Thunderbolt thru mine with no issues since it's what I had and i wanted to shoot the gun, but I think I might take a look at the bore after seeing your post.

Shooting with a supressor fouls up a semi auto action really fast. Depending on the ammo the twist rate on an AR may be incorrect to properly stabilize some bullet weights. This may lead to a baffle strike. One more thing.... Just because it won't cycle without a can doesn't mean that it won't work with a can perfectly as the can will increase back pressure

I had a similar problem several years ago with a new Ruger MKII with a stainless 5 1/2" bull barrel. There was lead sticking out past the end of the barrel. Don't remember the ammo brand, but I believe it was a truncated bullet.

friend at work showed me his .22 cal m&p with lead sticking out the barrel. he was also using thunderbolt. all the stories ive heard of this involve large volumes being fired quickly and the barrel being very hot. that could happen with any non jacketed lead round.
