Lol definitely. I really did not expect it to do this. I expected a dent/deformation of the plate. But i certainly didnt expect a perfect hole through it. Not to mention the plate got knocked a good 6 to 8 feet back from where it was sitting.

Now you know why our military started issuing M14s to soldiers going to Iraq. When my DIL left for Iraq tour #2 in Dec. '05 she was issued a M14 and a M4 carbine. When she returned she bought a M1A.

.308 vs 3/8 AR500 steel

Post by Mudcat » Mon Mar 19, 2012 5:45 pm

That is odd I have several AR 500 and 450 plates that have been shot hundreds of times from .308 and 30/06. Some as close as 25m but mostly 100-400 yards. Not a single one has a hole in it, one has a nice dent from a .338LM.
The round you shot this with do the bullets attract a magnet?

Just checked and they do attract a magnet, steel core makes holes in steel lol. Since this plate has already been sacrificed I'll try it again next range trip with some lead core ammo.

What's the head stamp on those?

My BIL has a 3/8" thick stainless plate, shot 5 times with 160 gr. soft-point ammo thru a Swedish Mauser. It has 5 holes in it.

125 gr. .30-06 soft point will do the same.

i need to get me some more, its not the most accurate ammo but for about 50 cents a round i wont complain....beats the 1 dollar + per round price of decent ammo.

Interesting are you sure you have AR 500? The HXP that the CMP is selling now days has a bi-metal jacket if you pull the bullet and put heat on it the lead will melt out of the center but no steel core. Just a copper washed steel bullet case. It will blast right through a 3/4" regular mild steel and stainless too. But won't do shit to AR 500.
I buy my targets from http://bobcatsteel.com/.

Who's targets are those? AR500 should be able to take a .308 at 75 without a hole. Maybe a dent but not a clean hole. I have some AR500 plates and while I have never shot a .308 at it at such close range I have seen it take a .338 at 100 without so much as a dent.

Another question did you weld the stands on the plates? Welding will soften the areas around the weld but that hole looks pretty far away from the weld.

On plus side you know can always claim, that the last round must have passed through the hole. That's why it didn't move.

I got them off ebay from a seller with very good feedback. And i have no issue with these plates because they have stood up just fine to the calibers specified in the ad. It warned not to use high velocity rifle rounds, but of course i wanted to see what would happen...now i know lol.
