What do you think about this new Manual HS rule?
Daughter just told me that due to Sandy Hook, duPont Manual HS students starting next week all have to be wearing photo ID cards around their neck at all times. If caught without one at any time they get detention.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

How does that have to do with SH?
I don't wanna say what I am first popped into my mind, but I will.
Is this like the way dog tags are used in the military?

Don't know, she just told me tonight, need to find out more. Love how they give us one day (Friday) to say anything about it.

Didn't think about the dog tag angle.

Keep wondering if she's adding the Sandy Hook part.

Ignoring the sandy hook angle....
Don't most of us have ID badges at work? If this helps them keep track of kids and identify students, great. When I went to Manual there were almost 1800 students there. Impossible for teachers and administrators to know them all. Plus, manual sends students to ypas and to UofL for classes. As a parent, I like the added safety and security I think this would provide.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A JCPS high school revised its security policy as a result of the shooting in Connecticut. Beginning January 23, DuPont Manual High School students will be required to wear a school-issued identification badge every day, all day long.
"With the horrible tragedy in Newtown, we would be remised if we didn't sit down and look at what our policies," Principal Larry Wooldridge said.
School personnel sent a letter to parents outlining Manual's new policy. Students will receive a lanyard and ID during homeroom January 23.
"We require visitors, parents, and staff members to wear an ID, but we have 1,900 amazing students who do not wear IDs. We need to quickly identify our kids," Wooldridge said.
Administrators referenced Manual's close proximity to UoL's campus and how often students come and go from the building.
"We have students who attend UofL classes every day and we have students from UofL walk past our campus. So we just need to be able to quickly identify who everyone is on our building," Wooldridge said.
Ultimately, it's the student's responsibility to bring their ID to school every day. "A lot of my classmates are kind of apprehensive about it," Senior Robyn Blackman said. "I think they're really going to realize that it makes for a safer, more secure environment and the administration really does care about our safety especially since the Newtown incident."
If a student forgets their ID, they'll be issued a sticker - similar to what a visitor wears.

Re: What do you think about this new Manual HS rule?
My school had to stop this a few years ago due to the expense and general hassle.
I'm not opposed to the idea, however. We've had a couple of incidents where kids who didn't attend school popped in for questionable reasons.

Bullitt east has started this student id concept also. $5 gets you a picture id and a B.E. Lanyard to hang it from. they claim it is for lunch accounts and checking out library books......

Trinity has this. You needed it to get into each building and I think it held lunch money if you put money in an account. It was a real pain, but I see the point. I wonder if this is a security measure or just something they've wanted to do and now have approval in the wake of a school shooting.

Big city thinking, I guess.
Glad it's not like that here.
Our teachers know the kids and who belongs in the school.
I work for the Govt. in a Federal building.
We know who belongs in there and who doesn't.
No need for ID.
We have them but only use them to gain access to buildings in Louisville, Arlington, and such.

It's not the rule that bugs me, it's the reasoning they're stating.

I think its generally a good idea. But what's the plan for lost/stolen ID cards. I'm sure in a school that size they will loose 200 or more the first year and now there are potential non students with student ID.
