Any small electric repair shops?

Doesn't fit in the other categories? Maybe just want to post up some humor or random happening? This is the place for it.

Any small electric repair shops?

Post by kokopelli » Fri Aug 13, 2021 6:08 pm

My daughter plugged her record player in using the wrong power cord, and blew a capacitor on the circuit board.
It’s not an expensive record player, and it looks like the capacitor was the only casualty, so if it can be fixed economically I’d like to do that vs buying another.
Are there any small electronic type repair shops anymore? I’m in Middletown…

I can’t decipher what’s left of the old capacitor to identify it, but I’m sure an expert could easily- melt the solder, remove the old base and resolder new capacitor…

Might want to try magnetic tape. I think they are in Jtown now.

Just put a bunch of smoke back in it and seal it with epoxy.

You'll be fine!

Unfortunately, the bench time will probably cost 1/2 or more of the the value of the player. This is a COMMON issue.
What are the values of the caps on either side? 10uF, 47uF & 100uF and volts 20v-100v are common values for input filter/conditioners. I'll dig through my box-O-lectronics to see if I have one.
Oh, how so high they fly........ only further to fall.

That’s what I was afraid of. It was only $60 new…

Here’s the components on either side of the blown one:

Just replacing the capacitor might not fix it.
Something else might be wrong that caused it to go bad.

What caused it was the wrong voltage power cord being plugged into it! It sounded like a.22 going off when it blew.

Oh ya you said that.
If you can put the wrapper together enough to figure out the value the rest should be easy.

Possible easy fix, that bang was a all or nothing sound.
