I think I can fit a range on my property.

Doesn't fit in the other categories? Maybe just want to post up some humor or random happening? This is the place for it.

I think I can fit a range on my property.

Post by plumber_bob » Tue Aug 18, 2020 5:06 pm

The way my property is laid out I don't feel comfortable shooting on it because of the livestock behind me and houses a few hundred yards on either side of me.
Pretty much have to shot straight down in the ground to be safe.

But I've been watching, Kentucky Ballistics, and he has a back stop built out of railroad ties.
I think that if I could build one similar then I could shot safely enough that the neighbors wouldn't get nervous.
I'm out in the country enough that there is shooting all around but I don't know any of them.

Thinking of 7 ties high and 3 deep with sides of similar dimensions. Might even be able to make a wall of 3" rock around the back to help more.

Any thoughts, or sources for the ties?

I figure I might get between 80-100 yard shots but mostly less than that.

Remember when you came over and we went walking into the woods? I talked about building a small range into the back?

If you cut it into the ground then place those ties with some say tires filled with material that would be a perfect setup.

It would not have to be real deep, but the more the better. Drainage is the factor here though. The "backyard" setups I have been to with these had simple poor man's french drains to nothing, with a decent layer of gravel. This can get rather expensive the more elaborate you want to go. Hence why I am still in the "planning" stage with mine.

If you have a natural elevated area that is set away from the house and other things you don't want rounds near, I say that might be a decent place to start looking at.

There is a Range / gun shop about 1.5 hours from Louisville on I 64 West. Forgot the name of it, but he dug out a large trench for his range. It was a really neat set up and made a great backstop. Something to think about if you know a Dozer guy.

I'm on level ground so I don't think drainage would be an issue. Never seen any standing water even after those heavy down pours.
Prolly would have a good rock base tho.

Finding the ties is the hold up for now or I'd be putting it up already.

It's a long haul from you (60-75 miles maybe), but Nationwide Fence and hardware in Pendleton usually have a pretty decent supply of them.

My land has some decent rolls to it so I used it to my advantage.

I need to do some more saw work and use the cut down trees to shore up the berm I make.

They leave piles of them next to train tracks at times. If you are sneaky enough you could get em free! :llama:

It’s been several years since I got them & can’t remember the price but I don’t think it was too bad. Bassett hound we used to have would like to escape. If she could get her nose under the fence the rest of her would squeeze through. Put them around the fence to keep her in. I may let them go if my kids don’t want them for anything at their houses. . I think I’ve got 12

There is a huge pile at the crossing at Bardstown Junction on 61. Would be slick if I could get them but R.J. Corman won't sell to the public.
Me sneaking some off,... my luck isn't that good to try that, and I don't look good at all in orange, I'm pretty sure.

I have half a dozen that i will be pulling out of our flowers beds here soon. If they are not rotted i will let you know and you a welcome to them. I am a bit of a hike from you though, in Crestwood. Could also load them in my truck and meet in Middletown during the week while i am at work if that is easier.
