Brush cutter recommendations

Post by Toecutter1978 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 4:46 pm

So my weed trimmer gave up the ghost and the piston locked up inside the head. All I was doing was trying to wack down some rather stubborn overgrowth. So I'm thinking I may need one of those brush cutters instead of a regular weed trimmer. I would love to get my hands on a Stihl bike handle setup, but I cannot justify $400+. Has anybody purchased these and had any luck; or anything within the price range under $300?

I've used this idea when I had the farm. Works good but you gotta pay attention to what you are doing and what you're about to do.

Works great when you get the blade balanced properly.
Also used 3 sections on chainsaw chain. Worked about as well if I member rite.

I used regular weed eaters to do it.

I’ve used Stihl’s saw blade on my FS-94r and had good luck with it.

The blade looks straight up like a circular saw blade.

It’s not what I would call a quick change over from spool to blade but I like it.

edited: I put a chainsaw model number instead of the string trimmer number.

I tried that, I think that's what led to the motor lockup. I just pushed it too far, even with a richer oil mix. Maybe it's the brands I keep buying. Hmm.

I’m a Stihl fan, but for their homeowner grade stuff, I’d go for echo

A brush blade didn’t kill your trimmer

Gotta agree. I've got the same Stihl I was using when I was16 on the farm. That was 28 years ago. Don't know about their quality these days, but as long as mines running, I'll keep pumping fuel through it.

No, I think running it for longer than it should have and it got really hot. It was a Murray, great for trimming around the house and mailbox but not for what I was using it take down.

I have a Cub Cadet that's 10+ years old and that's all it's ever had on it is a blade and it's still good to go. I'm terrible about maintenance and taking care of stuff like that also. Only thing I've ever done is carbs and carb kits because of the shitty ass fuel we have now. I may have put 1 plug in it also.

Is yours one of those walk behind models? Neighbor has one of those Dr mowers and loves it. I really haven't given a wheeled brush cutter much thought actually.

Yeah I know. It did last me all those years I lived in Crestwood. So I did get my money worth out of it. I think I s,hould just let the stuff grow a bit and save a few more pay days and buy a better quality. The entry model of Stihl is priced at $400, that's with the bike handle.Image

I got lucky.
I bought this house back in Feb., and the only people to own it, (built in '67), really took good care of it. And after they passed, the kids kept it up just as well. The place came with 3 battery powered weed eaters that all work. Had to bye batteries tho. Also came with a riding lawnmower, 2 push mowers and 4 ladders. The mowers all work, all tho I bought a bigger rider and had a pusher. Ladders are all in good to great shape. Also came with an O25 chainsaw that is close to new.

The only work on the house I need to do is one day upgrade the electric from 100 to 250amp. Other than that,... it would just be the modifications I want, like the gun room I added.

Still gotta do the up keep thing with the yard. And maybe next year have a garden ready to plant.

No, it's like a regular straight shaft weedeater, but with a 4pt ninja star looking blade. The large string walk behind things are badass! At least the only one I've seen in action was.

They had a little trouble during the transition to lower emissions, but they’ve been squared away for the last 8 years or so
