06 Explorer A/C Issues

Post by Rem700 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 11:49 am

Yesterday my wife called and said the truck was making a loud squeaking noise at start up. She was at a store and started it and went to back out and the noise happened. Said she smelled some burning (like clutch or brakes). I went and looked at it and did not visually see anything wrong. Belt was tight and we couldn't re-create the noise. However the A/C was no longer cold at that point. Im thinking A/C compressor or compressor clutch. Truck still drives fine, just no cold air. Already got with johnny on a price for compressor parts but just wondering if anyone has any experience with this or advice. I can part swap with the best of em but im not the greatest at diagnosing problems, esp with limited time to do it. What say you?

Is the clutch actually cycling in and out?Or not cycling on at all?

This. When it locks up it more than likely burn the belt .

Whole compressor or just the clutch?

Also can i use the recharge kits to recharge the system if i have to dissemble? I have recharged systems before but never after a repair where the system was opened.

Copy that. I may just bite the bullet and do that instead of trying to trouble shoot it part by part.

Nevermind lol. I dont have a vacuum system anyway. Wonder if auto zone or advanced does those for tool rental? Or does ProCroatian have one? I know he advertised A/C work a while back?

He has a whole AC reclaimer machine. Definitely the way to go. It will make all your pressures right. You have a high side and a low side and just using those "dump" hoses screws those pressures up. Maybe do the work and see if he will vacuum and charge it.

Will do. I'm going to mess with it some tonight and will probably hit you up for parts in the next few days. Gonna see if I can borrow my moms vehicle for a few days.

Would it hurt anything to swap the compressor and then drive it to Pro-Cro's? Leave the A/C off i would guess?

If im thinking right its just another pulley when not engaged......

You "can" but lots of reasons not to. Mainly, damage and the cooling performance will not be what it should

Wouldn't hurt anything. You might want him to put a new dryer in it though

Change compressor, change the O ring seals in the parts that you can get to easy, while your at it. Get new belt, and have it charged by someone who can vaccume it down.

I took care of him today. Nice and cold now.
A cop stopped me on the street and said "we're looking for a mugger who fits your description" , so I said "okay I'll do it".
