Sometimes if they're disturbed in the laying process they'll pack up and lay elsewhere. The in-laws had a box turtle laying in their flowerbed recently.

Obviously she didn't care, or get the chance to lay elsewhere. Cool stuff.

Yea she was not happy to see me. I didn't know she was laying and I picked her up cause my kids and dog were out. I realized she was laying and brought her back. That was a half hour ago.

I rescued a giant snapper this afternoon. It was the biggest turtle I've seen outside of the ocean or zoo. It was trying to cross the road. I stopped and picked it up and set it in the grass to try to give it a chance at least. My hands still smell terrible from picking it up. Learned a lesson today. Snapping turtles smell bad. At least this one did.

Kids have caught some big ones at my place. They found one this weekend that could fit under a coke can.

I need to.find another baby snapping turtle. They are fun to raise up.

And yeah, wild ones do stink when they musk you. It's a defensive mechanism.

If the kids haven't released this one, do you want it?

She was big. I would guess 14 to 15 inch shell front to back. Tail was another 7 to 8 inches and the head was about the size of a baseball. Pretty heavy too.

Yep i had my kids (and the neighbor boy who hangs with my youngest) to come over and look. But told all of them to stay away and told them they could lose fingers or more if this got a bite. With my youngest at six and his friend at 5 they would lose a few fingers or even a hand if this thing got em. So yea they all got a dire warning.

Keeper of the eggs lol

A friend in animal control has suggested relocating the eggs because turtles tend to return "home" and i dont really want a dozen big ass snappers around my creek where my kids and dogs play. Havent made a decision yet on that though.

Well that snapper did return home to lay her eggs. I bet they have been spawning there for a time already.

You can either give the kids a warning about nature and coexist and during the nesting season be diligent.

Move the eggs and hope they don't return.

Go all Darwin and smash the eggs, or better yet make an omelette out of them proving you are the dominant species to rule the land!

It kind of like a choice your own path storybook! Hahahaha!!
