When's The Woodworking class? I figure I'll show up to that and there will be enough other people there to help me load that piano up to take home

Craft center project build

Post by Gunsmokin » Thu Apr 06, 2017 6:35 pm

Today, I feel like I got my butt kicked. The panels had to be cut to size and profiled. The amount of material that has to come off the face of the panel makes for a lot of passes through the router. It also makes a huge mess. Man, I need some dust collection!

The stiles are purposely left a little long so the panels can be assembled and then trimmed to final size.

Craft center project build

Almost a solid 12 hours on this thing today. Ugh! It is kicking my rear good. Got a fair amount done today though.

Cut the panels to their final size for the 2 large doors. Drilled about a million pocket and shelf pin holes. Assembled both large doors and filled some "extra" shelf pin holes that were mis-located due to a brain fart on the main cabinet.

The wife is getting very excited!

I guess I missed this yesterday. Yeah, a shop-vac works alright. Mainly though, I sweep up the majority of the shavings and pull out the leaf blower to clear the rest of the dust out! Lol.

Primed and painted the cabinets that are more, or less, complete. Turns out, I'll have to put the cabinet together up where it is going. I failed to take the door openings into account when I was in the "design phase." It's about 3/4" wider than the door openings. FML! I need to find some hinges that I can take apart to mount the main doors to the center cabinet. Piano hinges aren't going to work out very well.

Paint looks pretty good. Used oil base so it is a tougher finish than latex. Had a bad experience with latex on cabinets already. Not doing a replay of that.

I need a shower. Used my Wagner sprayer for the primer, which worked out well. Started to spray the oil based with the power sprayer. It got clogged and I had a big ole' mess in the sprayer. Ended up rolling the last two cabinets with a foam roller. The finish is pretty comparable. Roller was probably faster and less of a mess.

If I had used oak or maple I would have stained it. The plywood we got for the cabinets is only nice on one side and the poplar on the panels isn't really a stain grade wood either. I hate to think how much oak or maple would have cost to make the panels. The poplar was over a hundred dollars.

That looks awesome! You've got waaaay more patience than me, if a project takes more than a half day I'm in over my head. Plus I'm more of a build it with 2x4's kind of guy. I spent 12 years doing cabinetry and have zero interest in that stuff anymore but I can sure appreciate someone who does it.

Thanks, MK. I've stalled out on it this week. Need to get busy on it this weekend. I still have a piece for the top to make that will have a cornice around it with some l.e.d. lights recessed into the bottom of it. Also have another set of doors to make that fold in that are attached to the main doors.

Well, it's been a week, or so, since I had any time to do any work on the project. This weekend I did get to a point to bring the main section and the 2 main doors in the house/room where the cabinet will be. It may not be in its final spot, but it's in the room where it will stay.

I made some adjustable feet for the main cabinet and installed some little casters on the doors to support the weight when it gets full. I don't have any pics of those.

I also worked on the top. It will have some LED lights in it and a cornice around it. It will be attached to the main part of the cabinet and protrude out toward the front when the doors are opened. It just has a coat of primer and a light coat of paint in this pic. It will get sanded one more time and then painted with a 2nd coat.
