And if you look out the left side of the aircraft

Post by WLJ » Sat Aug 27, 2016 6:48 pm

You will see part of the port side engine missing

Wonder how much of the inlet was ingested?

There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Saw that on the news earlier.

They reported a piece from the motor blew into the cabin and it depressurized.

Looks like it exploded from within. Wonder if it swallowed a bird? We had one like that about a year ago.

Or someone forgot to lock it down properly and it ripped off.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those the inlet cover lockdown levers on top in the up position?

Don't think so. Those are probably side cowling latches. The damage looks like the trauma came from within rather than from outside.

Cowling is what I meant when I said inlet cover. Just couldn't find the word in my head last night.

I was trying to find a diagram of a CFM 56-7B26 to see how the cowling is attached but all I could find without spending too much time where diagrams without the cowling.

I've seen damage like that up close come through the shop. Things spinning at 20k-40k rpm of any significant weight even ounces can cause havoc. Could be also something came loose, that's why everything is safety wired.
Oh, how so high they fly........ only further to fall.

I'm pretty sure those are the latches for the cowling. Our maintenance guys pop them open all the time and they do look like that. I imagine those got popped by whatever force ripped the inlet off.

How many of those latches are there total? Diagrams I've found give no clue
