Anyone build a bed frame?
Does this look like it would be sturdy enough?

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
I tend to over engineer things when I do projects, but it seems solid enough fro a child say under 80lbs.
Oh, how so high they fly........ only further to fall.

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
Personally I'd put more legs just because I could but I suspect that could hold a refrigerator ( not that I'd try ). It's essentially 2x4 floor joists with a plywood floor. Excellent design for weight distribution.

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
no way I would sleep on that bed... Then again like Nemo said, I have a tendancy to over engineer things when I build something.

Some people don't want to drop a stupid amount on a bed frame.
Or some people take more pride in what they can build vs what they can buy.
Ie. My father and I built a koi pond in our back yard vs paying someone to do it, it's far from perfect but WE did it.
Or they wanted a great mattress but wanted to spend that extra say 500$ on ammo

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
while the structure of the bed deck looks great, the legs are ridiculous. Should have place them on the inside of the frame ( i think they did the outside to make up for there error in measurement). With them on the inside you could later wrap it in some cabinet grade plywood and stain it up for a nice frame. To me thins just seems GHETTO! BTW this opinion is coming from a guy with no bed frame.....our mattress and box spring are sitting on the floor lol.

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
ROFL! Our is too don't worry!
I want it off the floor, our frame broke about a week ago and I'm ready for it to stop.
I've pretty much denied this set up, still unsure of what I want though.
I'm so torn!! Started thinking about reloading again too hahahah!!!!!

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
So you are talking about yourself who doesn't want to go buy a frame? LOL
For what its worth, you can go to a furniture store and buy bed rails for about $30 (I have several times). The box and mattress will easily sit on bed rails for an extended amount of time til you can afford to go buy a headboard and footboard if you so desire. No more ghetto!

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
In all actuality, they can have a swingers group orgy on it and be fine IF they took the vertical legs and made them 6 inches shorter and put them under the actual frame (horizontal frame is set on top of the legs) then used joist plates and hangers. even the cheap pine 2x4 (about 1 3/4x3 3/4 milled) has a vertical load of around 1700lbs at standard 8 foot length with the right brace ties. when a house or structure is built and hit by a tornado or earthquake ect, te thing that gives and makes it fail 98% of the time is the things that tie them together. A screw has several thousand psi break strength if pulled lengthwise, if bent or pushed side to side, the shear strentgh is weak. i have 4 huge fish tanks and one of them, a 125 gallon is on a pine stand, has 4 corner and then 2 center vertical supports that hold the whole tank setup. the tank with just water is 1400+lbs, with more dense coral (about 150lbs of it and less than 2 inches deep), limestone, flagstone and other decor, it is probably close to 1600+lbs and the supports... 6 little 1x3's. the frame as it sits will hold the bed and them, without the leg bottoms braced or having gussets to keep from rocking side to side, it will side shear.
I think it said it was 76x80 inches, thats around 42 square feet, with it at a 2x4 every 16 inches, it would have a live wieght of probably 30lbs psf so roughly 1300lbs without the center legs. sorry for the jabbering, being bored if a bad thing. you can support alot of weight with even the smallest thinnest stuff if done right, like an egg, you can take an egg, cup it into your hand and squeeze and it wont break, or even take 2 cartons of 12, remove the top and if you stand flat down on them you can stand on them all, give it incorrect side weight and then you get the weaker shear

Re: Anyone build a bed frame?
Hi, I'm the Red-Headed Mommy. Going through my blog stats, I was interested to see this site come up with a lot of hits, so I decided to check it out I'm so glad it stirred up so much conversation!
Just wanted to provide you with an update on our "ghetto" bed frame:
It is still standing, despite A LOT of "marital" relations--we are a very happy married couple. We took this into consideration when we built it. Combined we weigh about 370 pounds--it doesn't even creak when we get into bed.
The amount and location of the legs have not been any type of problem. We purposely put the legs on the outside because we wanted a lip to help prevent the mattress from sliding off.
We are quite able to afford to buy a platform, but we wanted to make it ourselves so that we could have it higher. Having the higher clearance provides us with the opportunity to put crates and storage bins underneath. We were not at all concerned about how it would look because we are putting a bedskirt over it so no one will ever see it. We take pride in the fact that we aren't like most other people and take the initiative to make what we want instead of wasting money on something we settle for. In addition, we built a headboard (which will be up on my blog this week if you're interested) that included upholstery, and I spent A LOT of money on the fabric, so it was nice to keep the frame on the less expensive side.
I hope this clears up the following issues:
We have sex, a lot, and for a duration (no 2-5 pumps here). But, sorry, no swinger's orgies!
We are not "ghetto" nor are we unable to afford--we prefer to do things ourself
The design was planned for a purpose and we don't find it ridiculous--on the contrary, we're very happy with it.
I also wrote at the end of my post on my blog that we hoped others would take it and make it better--that's what makes the world go round!
Oh, and yes, I am a natural red-head and I am totally all for the right to bear arms and would like to learn to shoot someday (so that I can chase teenage boys off my porch when my girl is old enough to date
