A guy in the navy that I sit beside on one of my flights told me that he was told that they follow that route because if you have trouble once you leave Cali coast you are fucked. If you're over or near land, your problem isn't nearly as serious when you can land somewhere. Also you're correct, distance isn't much difference. A chic from Hawaii said her flight from Hawaii left Honolulu went east to Cali and up the coast and followed around the same path as us. That seems really crazy to me.
