Inexpensive target construction

Post by Dave1965 » Thu Apr 24, 2014 10:30 am

I think BIGC was telling me about this but I haven't seen it posted here and it may save some people some money. I usually like to buy those Birchwood Casey made SEE IT WHEN YOU HIT IT targets at walmart or the local gun shop. I think they are usually like a dollar or so a target for the big ones.

Buy the fluorescent poster board at walmart, buy some cheap clear packing tape and tape over the entire board, spray paint the .99 black paint or primer over the entire taped area, wait for it to dry and then cut into desired sections. Presto...same concept, and for one roll of tape and one can of paint/primer you should be able to make multiple pieces of poster board.

Sorry if someone already posted this but I intend to save bucks by doing it this way from now on. I love the instant gratification of knowing I hit the target (and to old eyes, I will take all the help I can get).

Awesome idea! What does the tape between the paper and paint serve?

I remember it to but I am not sure who told us about it. It was that day we walked Shepherdsville after you went to the MGS. Somebody was explaining it to us, I thought about trying it but havent yet.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

This is the way I 'think' it works ... When you tape over the fluorescent poster board and then paint over that, the concussion from the shot will flake the paint off the tape and you can see the fluorescent pink or orange again outlining the hole you just made ...
I like it ....

Yes you should see the fluorescent paper at the edges where the hole was made. Similar to the way the store bought ones work now. The bullet pushes the tape threw the poster board of course and where it breaks you see color beneath the black. I would think that if you can get the cheap clear packing tape at big lots for $1 (I did) and poster board for 89 cents and a can of primer for .99 at wallyworld, you should be able to do several poster boards for 5 or 6 bucks.

You can do about the same thing with a piece of plywood with a black garbage bag stapled to it and spray painted white.

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

here is what I have done recently for a cheap target. I like the way it breaks down and does not take up much room when you are done.

things that I did differently were to only use 6" bolts and I used wood from scrap pallets from work. all told I have about $15 in bolts, washers and wing nuts and that is for back ups in case something gets dinged. make sure you get bolts threaded the entire length.

I used this guys basic idea for the backing too. 2 sets of 3 pieces. 2 40" boards and 1 15.5". only two drill holes for each pair. I guess I could to four drill holes and have the entire backing stack up for when it is broken down but have not done that yet.

I am pretty happy with the set up. it is sturdy and cheap.

I will try this poster board idea next trip to NH. Imgoing to make some stands from pvc pipe. You can glue or not glue depending upon how much you want them to break down.

You can also take poster board and lay Ketchup packets or Hot sauce on it and then tape over the packets. Kind of messy.
