11 year old made a proud father today
My son has been with me several times hunting, camping, etc... However today he stepped up and wanted to shoot his first deer. We have talked about it many times, but this year he really wanted to shoot a deer. My hunting took a secondary role to help him realize his quest. We tried several rifles this summer and found that he was most comfortable with an AR platform. I think the adjustable buttstock and straight line recoil played in his confidence. The chambering was the 6.5 Grendel. Low recoil and plenty of energy to take a whitetail deer. We spent the late afternoon with him dry firing at steel plates and verifying him natural point of aim. He was calling his "impacts " through the scope and learning the trigger press and follow through. The only real shot ended in a DRT 6 point buck at about 60 yards. He was concerned, as I was, about a clean kill. We are near the edge of our property and wanted to stop the deer quickly.
At 5 minutes to 6:00pm, he had his chance! I was concerned, but knew that he could do it if he went through the plan. He performed perfectly and he imagined a plate on the side of the buck.
The rest is history and all are happy! Maybe not the deer but he'll will be several good meals this winter. I am going to have a Euro mount made for him and engrave the spent case for him to keep. I now understand the pride my father felt! Thank you for you for reading this post and I hope those of you have not experienced this as a parent, that someday that you will. I Love this kid! Oh yes a photo to prove that it happened. Geno

I've been in the same place you are. It's a great feeling for you and your son. I bet you are as proud of him as he is of the deer. Congrats

This brings back memories of my son's first kill. Congrats to you both. it's a great day when you realize that your little boy is becoming a man, and a man to be proud of, to boot!
