no wonder I can't find a job
according to the counselor at Ky Voc-rehab I've been working with, 80% of employers polled said that they would not hire a veteran, and would hire someone else, even if less qualified, than the veteran.
What the hell?

Factored in that I wanted our students to see a successful man who went from high school to the army, got to goto OCS, flies high dollar equipment, served tours in Iraq, and now is a teacher. In my opinion, employers need to think about the positives a veteran can bring. In this mans case, I gurantee his story and influence on our students will change some for the better.
Wasn't there a program called Troops to Teachers which promoted this??

Re: no wonder I can't find a job
+1 Coach, my roommate is a combat veteran, went to apply at JCPenny locally, literally stood beside a sign in the store that said how.much their company supported our troops and veterans and was told the job was given to a 17yr old high school girl.....I will never spend a penny with that franchise againCoachf wrote:I hired a captain who flies choppers. 1st year science teacher. 1. Don't cold call
2. Don't be hard to reach when I want to call back
3. Get someone who knows something about education to answer my questions don't just say "he's a great guy"

that's what I thought, too, but this is her job- to stay on top of what hiring managers, HR people, etc are doing/thinking, down to what color suit and tie to wear to an interview.
She says these polls are very accurate.
Another strike against me is being retired. It doesn't matter that I'm only 41, she said that any resume with 'retired' in it gets thrown in the trash almost 100% of the time.

Being retired military myself I know the drill--it really sucks when going to the civilian market for a job--good luckkokopelli wrote:Frailer wrote:Ditto.Tyler wrote:I call bullshit

Re: no wonder I can't find a job
I agree. I would hire a vet in a minute. Most managers I know would prefer a vet to a non vet. I think even managers that are not ex military themselves have a hirer level of respect for vets. This article http://www.weknownext.com/workforce/us- ... t-targeted gives some good news about veterans being hired.Tyler wrote:I call bullshit

Re: no wonder I can't find a job
Maybe this lady has some secret knowledge that only pollsters can obtain, but I know that I got my job based solely on being a vet. IIRC, you're looking for something quite a bit higher-paying than I am, so that may have something to do with it.

I don't know- I've been looking at ~ $10-12 an hour jobs.Tyler wrote:Maybe this lady has some secret knowledge that only pollsters can obtain, but I know that I got my job based solely on being a vet. Great job satisfaction, even if I am working more hours for a fraction of the pay.
