used G19 malfunction

Post by iron369 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 9:14 pm

I bought a used glock 19c from a guy a few weeks ago. Today was the first time I've been able to shoot it. I was less than pleased with the way it was running. When I first bought it, I broke it down and cleaned it pretty thoroughly. I did notice some of the usual parts were after market. Anyways, back to the problem. The gun would on occasion lock back. I used different brand mags. I used different ammunition. I used different grains of the same ammo. always, at least once during a 15 round mag it would lock back. Every time it locked back I had to release it with the slide release. I could not pull the slide release back and let it go to load the next round. A quick Google search said the slide pin may be broke, but it seemed fine when I took it back apart when I got home. So I'm asking what anybody can suggest I look for or if anyone has had a similar experience to which they found a solution. (Maybe weak recoil springs?) I don't know how many rounds has been through it since all used guns seem to have 2 or three mags run through it. Throwing away the glock and buying a different brand is not the solution I was looking for. Thanks in advance.

I would first check the slide stop spring. Every time I have seen this happen, that spring is either broken or missing.

There are a few things that could cause this, but I'd have to run a few rounds through the gun and break it down. Especially, when it comes to the install of aftermarket parts. If you have the know-how I'd break the G19 all the way down and inspect all the parts.

Also check the position of your non-firing hand and make sure you aren't accidently it the slide catch while shooting.

The recoil spring seems to be an aftermarket assembly as well. The slide stop spring seems to be in good shape. I noticed something else really odd. The ejected cases were almost creased after being fired. I don't know if it's related or I'm just fishing for problems but I've never seen a spent case look like these.

That Gen 4 recoil Spring assembly look odd... like your missing a few coils, I'm not sure who the aftermarket manufacturer is. However, I'd do a recoil spring function check and would possibly put in a factory assembly and see what happens.

Also, I'd wipe all the parts down and just put the few recommend drops of oil on it.

That isn't a Gen 3 Recoil Spring assembly pictured above... so unless they put one in a Gen 3, that should be a Gen 4. If it is in fact a Gen 3, hopefully the swapped out the barrel as well because the barrel cut outs for the assembly are different between the Gen 3 and Gen 4.

It's difficult to tell the generation. I don't think it's a gen4 since it doesn't have backstraps. The frame has been trimmed and stippled so it's tough to tell. I'm thinking gen 3 though. I did think the recoil assembly might be the wrong one, but then again, I don't have any experience with the compensated models.

Hmm well that might explain a few things... so basically long story short, the individual you bought this Glock from obviously didn't really know what the hell he was doing and just started putting random Gen 4 and Gen 3 aftermarket parts in to what I assume is a Gen 3 G19C.... and with no surprise, now it doesn't run right.

Now, my advice... confirm Gen, then buy a complete factory rebuild kit from glock and ditch all the random aftermarket shit.
Or
Sell the said G19C in question, try to break even and buy another G19 that hasn't been fucked with by a backroom Bubba gunsmith.

With all that said, if you want I can look at it, run a few rounds through it and see if I can unfuck it or at least give you a specific diagnosis.

Possible he just put the recoil assembly from a 4 into a 3. Borrow someone's from a 3 and see if it works and then problem solved if so. I would be more than pissed if someone sold me a Frankengun that they knew didn't work instead of being upfront about it.

Yea, hopefully that fixes it, but the OP already stated that there are after market parts in the gun as well. Which would personally make me wary of all after market parts installed.

Truth. I figured he was just referencing slide release and mag release but even then if it is wrong it's wrong. I wouldn't want it sold to me.

I'm going to keep it and order a few parts. See where that gets me. I bought it from one of the Facebook gun pages so you get what you get I guess.

Anybody got a picture of the underside of the gen4 19? So I know if the barrel has been changed as well.

The fired case shows you are having headspace problem
Change to correct recoil spring
