Casting 9mm

I got a new mold a few weeks ago to cast 115gr 9mm from a well known Slovenian mould maker. It’s supposed to drop .359 at 115gr with wheel weight lead alloy. It is my first 8 cavity mold. After a short learning curve, I was throwing great projectiles. My only complaint is it’s dropping very consistently.356 at 124gr. I really wanted a little heavier bullet and I size down to .356 anyway.

I have the same mold but with a lube groove. I assume since you bought the smith sided version that you plan to powder coat or Hi Tek?

Yup. I’ll probably post pictures once I do. I just cast them tonight so I may pc them tomorrow.

what weight does your mold drop with what alloy?

Pc’d and resized about 400 tonight. I still don’t like how the yellow is turning out which sucks because I bought 2lbs of it and that’s a shit-ton of power for this kinda job. I added some blue to it just because it sticks really well.

I’ll do a final culling as I load them. I know in the picture there’s a couple that need to be removed.

Coated 388 Carolina blue tonight. Some of the green from the last batch stuck on the mat became stuck to the bases.

Been eyeballing a BP 1851 Navy and I started to price components and was a little shocked at how much 36cal lead ball costs.

Soft lead is running $1.20-$1.50 a pound. At 70gr per ball, it’s realistically about 90-95 ball per pound. That, of course, doesn’t take into consideration the equipment costs.

That’s why most people get into casting. I cast my 30cal for my 300 blackout for about $.04 each. Loaded it’s $.13 each. Subsonic 300blackout runs $.65 a round after shipping. Subsonic blackout suppressed makes me giggle like a school girl. Lol. There’s a few subsonic 124gr 9mm loads out there. I’m probably gonna play with these 124gr cast projectiles to get my ar9 to run subsonic reliably. It does great with 147gr factory ammo. I already have some 130gr cast to try as well. I’ve been trying to get a 147gr 9mm mold made. I know I can keep those subsonic. 9mm is almost not worth it though. Factory ammunition is so cheap right now. After time is factored, 9mm is not cost effective. I’m a tinkerer though. I do it because I enjoy it.

Late to this thread, but I must say you have done yourself proud. The Blue results on your boolits rivals any commercial offering I have ever bought, and better than most.

It would appear that the ar9 doesn’t like these projectiles. They are sized to 356 Percent May resize some to .355 just to see if it helps. They feed fine into any other 9mm I have, but I had to mortar the rifle to get the case to extract and use a cleaning rod to remove the bullet from the barrel.
