Lever action

Post by iron369 » Mon Mar 11, 2024 12:16 pm

I know some folks around here are into tube fed lever action rifles and some reload as well but I’m not sure if the reloaders are also lever action fans. If so, you are my target audience for this question..

Is there any additional steps you take when reloading your cartridges? Do you keep your handgun and lever cartridges separate? Extra crimp? Roll crimp vs taper crimp? Do you just use the manuals recommended oal or use the chamber? How would you set the oal on a 38special if it’s chambered for 357?

I’ll probably have more questions as I get into this adventure. Most videos I’ve watched are revolver shooters.

Here’s the little I know. Older rifles were designed for flat nosed ammo.
NO spitzer type projectiles, can cause chain fire in tubes. My old Winchesters don’t care for plastic tipped. My reproduction Uberti will load plastic tip and hollow points but has to be on spec. Some will load but not reliably.
Crimps are recommended even with skirted projectiles because of the liner force in tube of recoil.
This is a subject I need more info on also.

My Uberti is .357 ONLY, it refuses to load most .38 ammo. I’ve tried 8 types and only (CORRECTION) New Republic (1.463) will load but inconsistently. With revolver loads the OAL can vary widely because the cylinder is longer and strait walled.

On a similar note, my Winchester 1906 pump and Browning lever in .22 S/L/LR will eat ANYTHING I feed it. Even the crappiest dirty .22 on the market that will not feed in a semi auto.
