Used car shopping for daughter

Post by kokopelli » Sun Jul 09, 2023 8:36 am

I’m looking for a 4cyl auto trans vehicle for my daughter, about $10k budget.
Ideally would like a rav4 or maybe CR-V without a million miles… I’d prefer a small suv for visibility.
I’m also looking at May the ford escape but have no clue of their longevity…

the two mini suv's I would have to say to avoid completely is the chevy equinox and the Nissan Rouge. my inlaws have a equinox and has had nothing but constant problems, also every single driver of these shit boxes should retest because they can't drive. My mom drives a Rouge and it has has as many issues, but it is still miserable to drive.

Sister-in-law is on transmission #2 in her Honda CRV. 1st at 65K and now at 105K.
Be sure to check Carfax before buying!

Yep on the gm or Nissan… mom in law has an equinox is is a rolling garbage can, and I’ll never buy another Nissan after we had aQuedt minivan…

Crv’s are, just ok. Honda just can’t seem to get A/C systems and transmissions that last.

Don’t we have a resident Ford Focus expert here?

Focuses are great. Just research the years with the transmission module issues. I think it's like the 2012-18ish models.

The double clutch trans. Just avoid focuses with them and you'll be fine.

Other Focuses to avoid are the 00-04 with the single cam engine. Can just about guarantee it will drop a valve. Probably most of them have gone to the junk yard by now though. The twin cam engines are fine.

I think Nemo got burned on one of them. A buddy (and customer) of mines brother has one. They are on recall, but it's apparently a massive hassle to deal with. I sold him a Dorman module to fix it while they fight with Ford over it. They have apparently been on backorder for like 2+ years or something...haha

A buddy that's a 30+ year GM master tech and diehard GM guy said he was embarrassed to be a GM guy right now. He said you couldn't give him a GM car unless it had 1 or 2 different 4cyl motors. He said he wouldn't own a new V6 or V8 car or truck. He did said if you want a ton of bang for your buck on a new GM vehicle, to look at a Trax. He said handsdown best GM deal going on right now.

Yeah, I was going to mention Nemo had one and got F'ed over. Ford has been trying to bury the double clutch tran issue in the Gen III Focus like my cat buries a turd.

The wife loves her Xterra. I have to say, I like it more than I thought I would also. She wants a newer one (2005-2015) with less miles instead of something different like originally planned. I'm okay with that, and I never though I would be with any nissan really...haha

Rogue's are notorious for bad CVT transmissions. There's a reason they are the cheapest used SUV(or they were by a longshot late 2020 when I was SUV shopping.

Some on Focus forums say Foci is the correct form.

The double clutch tran we're referring to is an auto just avoid the Gen IIIs (2012-19) with them.
The reg auto transmissions in the Gen IIIs are good to go just not the double clutch ones.
someone else probably could tell you more about this since I didn't keep up.

I looked it up and the problem transmission in the Gen IIIs is call the DPS6 PowerShift

From wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Focu ... eneration)
Along with the Ford Fiesta, the Focus equipped with the Ford PowerShift transmission has received much criticism due to transmission shuddering, including several lemon law claims.[17] The issue is due to the dry type clutches associated with petrol models. Ford's current response is to replace the clutch pack assembly (with updated parts) when shuddering exceeds 250 rpm (upon customer complaint).

Ford claims that the transmission, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, is designed to improve fuel economy and has issued several software upgrades for the transmission. To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not required Ford to issue a recall, nor has Ford done so voluntarily. Focus models equipped with the conventional manual transmission have not been affected by the reliability issues.[17]

The focus auto duel clutch trans has been discontinued and repair limits/liabilities are reach. DO NOT BUY ONE WITH THE DUEL CLUTCH. I’m still in the class action suit that will come to naught.

The Ford 2.5 non-turbo is arguably the most reliable engine in any car. The accompanying transmission is not as great but no worse than anything else out there. I have a 2010 fusion with 2.5 and base trim. The 6F35 transmission is a strange animal but can be made reliable. Number 1 is fluid changes every 30k

I believe ford stopped using the duel clutch in ‘16-‘17. They forced repairs only till the liability/support term was over(3-5 years) and then said sorry about you luck.
