New Project Truck

Post by Mexican Kerry » Thu Aug 24, 2017 7:55 pm

Just brought this 49 Merc 3/4 ton home today. Cost me a 6 pack of beer cause my brother dragged it out of the bush with his skidsteer for me.

My son dumped gas in the carb while I cranked it over. It runs. It has zero rust in the cab and doors, and has a dump box. And a 255 flathead. Win.

I saw fix it up only as much as you need to, then daily drive it.

No rust in the cab or doors? It's in better shape than my 88 Silverado then! Lol

Just wondering how stuff can sit out like that and not rust in Canada. I thought it would be a moist climate that would promote rust.

There's plenty of rusty hulks here. Dept of Highways uses a lot of salt in the winter but not as bad as places like Ontario. One saving grace is if the vehicle was used on a farm (like this one) and didn't get a lot of on-road miles. Another thing that helps is that the wheels were not pulled off when it got parked, so it didn't settle down into the dirt.

The fenders aren't great on this one, and the box sides have some rust from leaves etc collecting in it over the years. The worst areas on this one are where fender pieces bolt together with a horizontal seam, the folded joints collect and retain the most moisture. At least they should be easy patches to fab up.

That truck would be considered near mint compared to some around here, even ones on the road.

Pulled the sending unit and draining the tank right now. Not looking good for re-using this tank.

Re-used the tank. Used a pressure washer for an hour to blast out the inside and then re-installed. New fuel lines and a filter to collect any remaining crap. Fuel pump wouldn't work until I realized I needed to prime the system then it ran on its own. I did a lap around the yard, not used to a non-synchro'd transmission!

Bad noise in the engine I need to diagnose before I run it too much.

Sounds like a rod knocking. Maybe why it was put in the bush to begin with?
