New project!

Post by Mexican Kerry » Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:06 pm

Still don't have the car yet, but its paid for. Trying to talk my dad into driving out east to pick it up for me cause I don't trust any of the shipping companies I've talked to, and none will commit to a delivery date or provide insurance in transit.

I've wanted one of these forever. Its gonna get a few minor changes once I get it.

3600 km if I stay in Canada, knock 1000 off if I cut down through Chicago and over to Detroit. One way.

Got the car home today. Left Detroit yesterday at 4 am. Drove for 18 hrs and had to pull over for a nap but my buddy was snoring too much so I just hit the road again. Long ass weekend.

He apparently wasn't along to drive, he snacked and slept a lot and needed to stop for piss breaks. Should have gone alone and I would have been home sooner. Roughly 3400 miles round trip plus the detours because of my "navigator".

Congrats on the car.

You might as well have taken a chick. Downsides would be the same but a lot easier on the eyes

Its a 60 yr old car, it needs work. Couple spots where the clear coat is coming off, but its 30 yr old paint. The car was done that long ago and has basically just been driven the odd Sunday or to a show. They told me its got about 3000 miles on it since it was built.

Who knows for sure, maybe it was sales pitch. As for rust, it has a couple small spots where the paint is bubbling so those need to be addressed at some point. My plan is to eventually repaint it when I do the tilt front but for now the body is going to stay except for doing the radius on the rear wheel wells.

MKwife told me I'm not allowed to dump a pile of money into it for now so the short term is:

radius wheel wells

new tires-its got re-capped bias plys on the back which will be swapped for some drag radials

redo exhaust with shorty pipes out the sides

maybe solid axle front depending on cost, it needs to sit higher. Lowering blocks on rear end will be removed and go from there.

9" rear with limited slip

Immediate things to do are: tach and speedo aren't working, lights are sketchy, old Hurst shifter needs attention or replacement. I needed another project haha.

Since its red and I can't do the body and paint right now it may get some graphics on the sides a la 60's gassers just for the hell of it. She's already been christened the "Cherry Bomb".

No drag radials

Get the old look cheater slicks from Coker.

I think they're radials anyways.

Putting some miles on it now. Been driving it as much as I can this week, working on little things like electrical etc. Needs tires bad, and trying to find some Bilstein shocks for it locally. Enjoying it the way it is though.

Took it to the car wash yesterday then to a BBQ we had at our shop for the crew and some suppliers. Ended the night as a taxi driving people home that had a little too much to drink haha.

Took out the lowering blocks today.

Before:

After:

Also found a few minor issues underneath. Rear shocks were poorly installed (didn't know that was possible) and need to find replacements. Transmission crossmember hacked up and needs replacement. Rear leafs barely holding on, tightened everything down.

Finally had a good look at the rear quarter panels underneath and looks like the wells were radiused before and patched back in. Won't feel bad cutting it at all now.

Ordered a new Currie 9+ setup for the Chevy, waiting on my brakes now so I can put it back together. 31 spline axles, new housing built to drop into a 55, bearings, and a Currie lsd 4.11 differential.

Image

And yes there's a disgusting cigarette butt in this pic. I'm not a photographer.

Image

Picked up a Muncie M22 with a Hurst shifter a few weeks ago and am swapping it in while the car is down. I'm going from a 3.36 rear gear to 4.11 but with the difference in first gears between the two transmissions I may not see a whole lot of difference in "feel" if I'm getting stupid at a stop light.

2.20 first gear in the Muncie vs 2.84 in the old Saginaw I pulled out. But had to do it, the whine in the Muncie will make up for its dead first gear haha.

Image

But the snowball effect is happening. No such thing as a simple swap when making changes. New trans crossmember, new clutch, new bellhousing, new motor mounts, etc. I just hope I have it back together and on the road this summer sometime.
