The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
...almost
Occupying my garage now is a 1996 Cherokee Country that has been in the family since new. My brother bought it off Bales' showroom floor (at my suggestion) in January '96. About a year later I traded it off of him for a Grand Am- he needed a commuter car.
I drove my first-born home from the hospital in this Jeep, in the snow. We drove it until baby girl number 2 came along and needed a mini-van (barf) for 3 kids. Luckily the in-laws wanted it. They drove it for 10 years, and unfortunately, it was parked outside, fortunately though it was maintained.
Last month they called; they were done with it- gave it back to me. Bam.
The bad- he bashed in the front bumper, the back bumper and something on the rear pass. door. As with most Cherokees, the floor are rusting through on it. Headliner falling. Rear main seal puking. Oil filter adapter leaking. Valve cover leaking form PCV valve never being changed. Cat rusted and clogged. Muffler rusted. Paint faded on top and hood bad. Rear leafs flat.
The good- it's a 4.0 Jeep.
Tada!
^ driver side not as bad- on first look it only seemed like surface rust, but poking at it revealed holes.
here i go-
Spent several hours getting the interior out so I could start...
Then spent 5 hours cutting out the driver's side floors. Chrysler looooooved their spot-welds!
I am beat!
To do list:
new floor pans,
headliner,
new rear leaf springs,
all 4 shocks, bump stops,
all new exhaust from engine back,
new seals,
plugs, wires, coil,
bang out dent,
front and rear bumpers,
cheapo DIY paint job
more I'm sure I'm forgetting

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
What's the big plans for it? Just drive it or off-road.
I've had a few cherokee's, always liked them but the gas mileage always sucked.

Only one I remember that dad had that got good gas mileage was a 4 cyl 80's model that was called a hurricane or cyclone or some shit like that. I was younger but it was a gray cherokee with a 4 cyl and got like 25 mpg or so and the engine had plenty of power

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
my son has an nice 2000 xj. great first vehicle. tough and parts aplenty. we put a 3" lift and mud tires on it before he started to drive it. he loves it. best part is, when he is done with it will become a toy/project for me to mess with.
Not everyone can be a winner or get a trophy, we are raising a society full of pu**ies

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
No lift on this one- it will be my DD when done (or the wife's). I've had several Wranglers and another XJ- built them; lifts, lockers, gears, etc. and then they were miserable on the street. I am, however upgrading everything in the suspension- bushings, springs, shocks, etc, but all 'oem' replacements.
Also, 20+ mpg can be had in the 4.0 with the right mods. I am putting on a stainless header to replace the cast iron POS exhaust manifold, new downpipe, Magnaflow cat, and Dynomax cat-back. Engine-wise, MSD coil, 8.55 mm wires, and 4-hole injectors.
The plan is for this one to be a solid, reliable 4x4 for everyday driving that still gets good gas mileage.
It might get an off-road appearance package with a brush guard, tail light guards, nerf bars, etc. but that's about it.

All I could ever get out of mine if I was being nice was 15ish.
12 with a lift and tires.
They are great vehicles though, pretty capable in stock or close to stock form.

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
I don't have any pics wheeling it but I take my f250 out to land between the lakes a few times riding some of the numbered roads if you haven't done it there's some pretty challenging roads in the park. .

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
The Jeep is roadworthy!
The truck that was my brother's got sold, so I had a fire lit under me to get it drivable.
Finallygot the floor pans in- what a freaking nightmare. I bought a 'complete' set of 4 floor pans from Rockauto.com that were Classic2Current Fabrication brand and had to beat and tweak the crap out of them to fit, and still had to patch in more metal in a couple spots. Got it all sealed up with seam sealer, then painted, then Herculined over the whole floor and rear cargo area, then put down sticky duct insulation (poor man's Dynamat). Seam selaer underneath and will undercoat it too.
Oh yeah, had to fabricate seat mounts for the fronts of the front seats out of angle iron- the original mounting points were part of the floor assembly. That took two days alone.
Once that was done I put on a new Magnaflow cat and a Dynomax cat-back exhaust; the old crap was hacked out of the way to put in the passenger floor. I will tackle the header this weekend probably, but needed to be able to drive it a few days ago, so that can wait. A new window regulator/motor assembly, and now I can order at the drive-thru!
It has the front section carpet and driver's seat in it only for now, but it starts, runs and stops.
Next will be the rear-end work. New leafs, shackles, shocks and service the diff. Then I'll start on the front...
this sucked:
I still need bumpers and fender flares.

Re: The Jeep Cherokee Flinstone car
UPDATE:
ahhh...the memories...
I finally got the entire interior back in it, including the headliner that I re-headliner'ed myself.
Then I tackled the rear leaf springs that were completely flat. I installed a pair of new oem spec leafs from General Spring. New U-bolts, all new bushings and even new shackles. Replaced the rear diff fluid with Royal Purple gear oil, and used a Lube Locker gasket instead of crappy RTV, knowing I need to do both rear axle bearings asap. Put in a pair of new Monroe SensaTrac shocks after I drilled out all 4 upper shock mount bolts that snapped off. I had to replace the right rear brake hard line. When I pulled off the passenger rear drum to check them, pieces of springs and the rear main shoe fell out- well, the metal plate that the shoe material used to be attached to did. The drums had never been replaced in TEN YEARS! Complete rebuild of the rear drum brakes ensued.
Fuel filter got changed while I was under there. The same fuel filter was still there from the last time I had changed it over ten years ago. No wonder it stalled while driving...
So I tackled the neglected coolant system about 3 weeks ago. New T-stat, new upper and lower radiator hoses. Complete coolant flush and new coolant. Brown gunk came out. Nice.
Transmission fluid drain and fill. No way I'm cracking open that pan to change the filter. Tranny fluid was black and smelled like burnt gear oil. Same for the T-case. Filled with Valvoline Max Life synthetic fluid.
This past weekend tackled the leaking rear main seal. New RMS, new oil pump, oil pan cleaned out, new gasket.
Also got the cracked stock exhaust manifold off to replace with my new stainless header. Header fits nice, but the intake manifold won't fit back on- header needs to be tweaked and material ground off the intake for clearance. Crap.
Since I used copper spray on the gasket, of course it tears away and I'm left with an intake leak, so I get to do all that over again. I put in new Monroe shocks up front while I'm under there.
But wait! there's more!
Just last week, before I could get to the cracked exhaust, the leaking rear main seal and tune-up stuff I still have waiting to be put on, it developed a random pattern knocking noise, which sounds as if it is coming from the bottom end. Judicious searches of the world wide web provides many different possibilities, and mainly the flex-plate to torque converter bolts being loose or a crack in the plate itself. I pull off the inspection cover, check all the bolts- tight. No cracks that I find. Hmmm....
Knocking sound is like a few rocks in a coffee can being tumbled. Always there upon start-up. Speeds up with rpm's.
Water pump? Could be.
I haven't had any time to have it down to separate the tranny to check the torque converter bearing or bolts, but was going to do that tomorrow-
but yesterday afternoon, picking up my daughter from school I sat idling for about 10 minutes, and the temp gauge crept up to the redline. I shut it off and let it cool, then had a non-eventful ride home. Today I thought I would flush the coolant again- I did it about 3 weeks ago and it was pretty dirty. I replaced the upper and lower radiator hose at that time, as well as a Stant Super 195 thermostat. When I flushed it today, it was nice and clean, bright green coolant/water mixture. Oh, well, it didn't hurt to do it anyway.
So of course today at her school, idling, it crept up to the redline, I turned off the engine, and in about 30 seconds after shutting it off, POP! and coolant and steam start spewing like a geyser from under the hood.
When the show was over I opened the hood to see that the cap to the Preston Flush Tee on the heater hose had blasted the top clean off.
I had a half gallon of coolant with me, so after it cooled off I topped off the expansion tank with that, then added about a gallon of water. I duct-taped the tee off well enough to get home....but it wouldn't start.
The sound I get when I turn the key is a super fast clicking, from the starter.
Did it short out the starter solenoid? Coil? Someting else? The battery is strong enough to roll the windows up and crank on it, with that clicking going on...
needless to say it is still sitting in the parking lot at her school...
