I'd say if you drove the 4.6 Vic decently it would do 18ish in town and pull into the mid 20's on the highway.

Back when I had a 3.27 rear end in my stang I got 31mpg on a road trip once. 5th gear. 4.6L
I agree tho that mid 20's on the interstate if you drive like grampa is what you will see.

Dodges are really fast though......at depreciating lmao! Between the two ford is better. Between all cars then these two aren't even on the map of good choices.

Crown Vic. 100%

Get an 03 and up if it's in your budget.

Two biggest issues are plastic intakes which crack and leak coolant and the relatively weak coil on plug design.

If you get those issues get a dorman intake to replace a leaking intake and if you start getting a miss replace with QUALITY aftermarket of genuine Ford coils, preferably all 8.

Everything else about those cars is pretty much bulletproof. 20 mpg is easily attainable in normal driving. They are safe cars that handle well for their size and if you get a p71 or Sport version they'll have a traclok reared and do awesome burnouts.

If your getting the smaller charger engine just get the crown Vic

I'll say this. The biggest police dept in the state used to run chargers for their traffic cars. Used to is the key word. When they were pulling out into traffic on the expressways the chargers were dieing. That was a pretty serious problem that happened to several of them. Likely early models but still

They no longer buy new ones. But several agencies still use them. Mainly the bigger engine ones

But I also don't recommend the crown Vic pice trade ins. One with 300k miles probably has a realistic ice of twice that from idling long periods of time. Driven hard and not always taken care of

Just my $.13

The v6 would probably be the only one in my price range. I havent seen a hemi for under 10,000. Im not planning on a police trade in for all the reasons you stated. I did think about getting an 80s crown vic with low miles, but i cant afford a project car right now. It seems the chargers (particularly the v6) are junk according to a majority on the web. I think ill go ahead and start looking for the crown vic.

I do intend to deck out the crown vic, though. Ive got a million ideas about how i want to customize it (nothing stupid like shiny rims).

LX Sport models are basically p71s in civilian garb.

Mercury grand Marquis is the same car but more "old folkish". You can always swap gears, exhaust and even suspensions to suit your needs.

Most of the Vickys come with 3:27 or 3:55 gears and that should be fine for better highway mileage. I had 3:55's in my 4.6L T-Bird and was able to routinely get 26-28 mpg on the interstate in Texas. Around here, maybe not quite that, as it has a lot more & much steeper hills to contend with. The T-bird isn't quite as big as the Vicky, but had a lot of insulation and wasn't much lighter.

Look around and see if you can find a Mercury Maurauder, it will have most of the desirable performance goodies in it already, including good highway gears.

I still say the P71's are a good deal, even if they require a little work.

Where else are you going to be able to pick up a 2000-2005ish vehicle for $2k with 125k or so miles on it?

The junkyard always have several Vic's, any parts you need or options you don't have can be added.

The main reason to me, you can save up $2k cash decently quick. No payments.

Hell yeah. The Marauder is at least halfway to a fun car. A good tune is what most owners recommend, and doesn't cost much. Not a super car unless you want to dump money into it, but if you want a big sedan that is fun to drive as is, the Merc is it. Although, all its good for is stomping on the foot feed and listening to the exhaust note while you wind it out on the interstate haha. Its not a race car in stock form.

Really though, I'd say a Ford is better bang for the buck. Mopar doesn't hold its value plain and simple. If you consider how any new vehicle depreciates as soon as it leaves the lot, add 50% for a Dodge. If you bought a whored-out ex-cop Vic, you'll probably be able to thrash it for a year or two and get your money back when you sell it or close to it. You buy a used Charger, it'll sell for Neon prices in a year or two.
