I normally load up the chains and head out when bad weather starts to see who I can help out but I cant do it this year.... hopefully this neurosurgeon gets me fixed up soon and I can get back out and having fun in the snow..

Nice Jeep..

I bought an old Jeep a while back....it's a 71 cj5...Never really cared for Jeeps, but I finally started driving mine this summer and really starting to enjoy it. Fun to have out on nice days and cruise in....Mines a hunk o junk, not anywhere the shape yours is.

I love CJ's. I cried when I had to get rid of my 78. Manual trans hurts the spine so I had to break down and get an auto. That CJ is sweet, and ugly is a good thing when it comes to Jeeps.

I try to help when I can. Tow companies make a killing during this time of year, heck they are in business to make money. Normally I get offered money, I just take some to cover fuel. Best was a lady with kids in a minivan. She was so grateful she gave me a loaf of banana nut bread she made, it was good!!

I want some sort of cable/ strap to carry in my truck to help if ever needed. What do most people use and can you use a tow hitch for it.

I carry a basic tow strap rated to 10,000lbs, a couple of small tow ropes and then in my tool box is a logging chain rated to 40k+ lbs....

I have two yank straps, both rated at 30k. On my rig I made tow points at each corner that I use D-rings. A tow hitch is not a preferred yank point. Folks will use the pin that holds the hitch in the receiver, they are only rated to 5k rolling weight. Now in an emergency, it can be used, but make sure everybody is clear so when it breaks, they are not hit with a projectile. As with any recovery operation, folks should not stand near the cables, straps, chains or ropes.

Chains are great, I like them. I don't use them due to weight and storing them in an already cramped rig. Now most folks will look at you crazy if you pull one out on the trail, they have a tendency to break after a while. Wire cable holds so much potential energy when under strain, when it breaks it goes flying and can kill. On my winch I use a synthetic winch rope, rated at 35k, way more than a wire cable of the same size(rope is 3/8"). Recovery gear is something that you will only use when it's truly needed, and in not the best conditions.

My sons first vehicle, got it a couple months ago. We had a great time putting the 3" lift on it. We also upgraded all tje steering components to new yj steering components.. Rides on 31s now.

Tow strap is best for these sort of things IMO...

A good tow strap is easy to stick under seat it's light and easy to get in and out..

Hitch is perfect for these sort of things as well...real easy to throw a tow strap over the ball..

Biggest problem I run into with a lot of cars, vans etc is they rarely have a quick easy place to hook a strap...got to watch where you hook them...u can easily crack or pull their bumper if you aren't careful...

I will be buying my son a bubba strap. Its like a bungee cord on steriods.. Suppose to be the shiznit for getting your stuck buddies out.

A 10k strap doesn't hold up so well. I've broken quite a few of them. Although I did pull Joe C's Jeep out with an already broken one...Twice...hahaha
I would definitely recommend at least a 20k+ strap. Bubba ropes are pretty cool too. I've only seen one in use but may pick one up.

i think I have a nylon tow strap around here somewhere. I found it in a parking lot one time. Otherwise would a auto part store have one to buy (pardon my ignorance on this).

The strap i have may not be 10k, i towed my buddies Chevy 2500 out with it do it may be a stronger strap

Ones that deal with the public mostly like Autozone and Advance probably do. Probably even Walmart/Kmart type places.

Agree

20k+ is mo' better

Bubba straps look awesome for the trail, but not so much for the street.

I use chain as well, heavy chain. Just because I got it for free.

I did notice that about the Bubba ropes, you can't ease them out of a hole. You have to petal down, shit flying, yank their asses out with them! haha

Years ago I saw a strap break and a hook go through a back window and hook into the windshield of a ranger. I hate those things...
