axle end sheared off in tranny!!! -Thank You Jesus!!! fixed!

Post by kokopelli » Tue Sep 03, 2013 3:55 pm

2004 Nissan Quest Se, 3.5 V6, 5 speed tranny...
The drivers side cv axle- the end has sheared off with the C-clip still in the tranny in its groove, with the 1/4" end of the splined shaft behind it.
No damage to the tranny splines- the c clip spins freely in its groove and the end piece spins and wiggles. If I could get the c clip removed, the shaft end should slide right out.
I've spent two hours in it with no luck. I used an awl with a bent end to try to pry one end out enough to grab with long needle nose pliers, but I can't pry one end up without it spinning, and I can't get another tool in the hole to hold the other end to keep it from turning. It's not a normal c clip either, with holes on the ends, it's just a flat circle of metal.

that sucks.... one possibility would be a small file to cut a groove into the clip in the hope that you could break it in two but the piece of axle behind it stops that. I have only have had a axle break off flush with the transmission for that one I wound up welding a bolt to the shaft and grabbing that with a slide hammer. I dont think that is possible here.

did it break while taking it out to replace it?

Creative slide hammer use might be a good option

I might try spraying some compressed air in there upside down to see if making it shrink makes it any easier to grab onto...stupid idea unless it works

Because its a Nissan.

I had just replaced the lower control arms and the drivers side axle popped out, which I thought was odd, and I though I had popped it back in. Later that day -Saturday- it popped back out when my wife backed out of the drive and got down the street. Pushed it home, repeat.
Was the. Driving it to get a front end alignment, bam- middle of shelbyville road yesterday. In the rain. Fixed it on the side of the road. Got it to the shop, got alignment done and into the garage. Picked up a new axle at autozone, btw, I had replaced this same one due to the joint being worn out due to a torn boot 10 months ago, and a reman unit was what was in stock at the time- so I pull the old axle out and see the end is gone...found it!

Pull the other shaft and then you can drive out the remaining piece. I have a tool that fits the old Fords that you had to drive one side out.

no go.
opening doesn't go all the way through- there's something solid at the end of the other axle. It has limited slip, so I wasn't very optimistic.

Duct tape.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

got a straight pick- hammered it against the c clip, which drove it under it and 'popped' it up just enough to get a hooked pick under it and yank- it took several tries and it finally flew out!!
