I need to step up my sharpening game. I typically take care of my pocket knives with a small Lansky Blade Medic. I've just stepped up to a CPMS30V knife and need something a little bigger and more capable. I also need to be able to sharpen cutlery. Chef's blades, Santoku etc. I am a sharpening moron. I've never been able to do it for shit. I am thinking the Spyderco Sharpmaker almost looks like it's so moron proof even I could do it.

1) Is my assumption correct on ease of use from inexperienced sharpeners
2) Will it do a good job on S30V?

Let me suggest you check youtube videos on sharpening wood working tools.
Some of those use 3000grit stones or sand paper.
IIRC they start with 800grit then 1k, then 3k.

Looks like you could split a split hair when done.

It's the holding shit at angles I cannot do. I can hold something perfectly vertical though.

First of all, S30V is a bitch to sharpen! HARD WEARING STEEL My Benchmade 940 is tough to sharpen, DON'T LET IT GET "DULL".

Angles of the grind determine the use and durability of the edge. Within reason any angle will cut. 15-20 degrees for slicing, 20-30 for durable utility, 25-35 for heavy duty chopping. The most important is the edge apex. Without each side terminating into a 0 degree edge, all the measuring and fancy tools don't mean shit! Here's a good no nonsense primer on sharpening:

This is 12-14oz veg tanned leather, 4mm or 1/8” thick. I have no clue what angle this scandi grind is but edge is apexed and polished. Cuts through the leather like butter!! This is my main carving knife and also preforms excellent on wood.

Thanks Nemo but I haven't the time, skill or honestly the desire to go to those levels. I really want to just find a decent way to keep my blades tuned while leading a busy life. If I can't sharpen them I will go to Carl at Heimerdinger's like I always have. Will the sharp maker do what I need man?

I have the same problem you do with angles. I try but never put enough time and effort in. I got a work sharp and it takes out most of the guess work. Has guides for he angles and progressive sand paper grits. Works pretty well for my hunting knives and my daily carry

Which one? I considered the Ken Onion one but it sounds like a single side only sharpen. I have expensive cutlery I don't want that on.

The Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener has worked very well for me over the years. It is a small motorized belt sharpener. The machine has guides so you are always in the same angle.

When I was working with Johnny I brought it in to work and sharpened some of his knives or was it just one, I cannot remember. The guys there liked it.

I use it to sharpen lawnmower blades, axes, scissors, and other kitchen knives.

I have even used it as a quick angle sander as the head is adjustable.

I have the Ken onion one. Not used it on anything expensive though so I can’t say.

20k is the highest I’ve seen. It was a $300 stone.

I bought the Sharpmaker and been cutting up lots of cardboard to dull the crap out of my CEO flipper. Will try it out on an AUS-8 blade and see how it works before it touches the new knife.

LEGIT. I beat the shit out of that CEO Flipper for a week. Whittled with it. Cut up tons of boxes. Took about 30 mins but I have it shaving. Never have I successfully sharpened a knife until today. I assume S30V is gonna take me 3 or four times as many strokes as AUS8 did but I'm willing to try it on them.

My Benchmade 940 is S30V steel. It holds an edge for a long time even in abusive use. Unfortunately it take a while to sharpen when dull. Key to it is never let it get full full. It takes the better part of a hour to restore razor sharp. Every couple of days to a week I run it over a polishing wheel with green compound then strop. Maintain the edge and it's easy!

AUS-8 = Lower mid range knife Steel.
CPM S30V = Premium knife steel. Holds an edge way longer. Supposedly a bit of a bitch to sharpen.

I have a Kershaw Blur S30V and I just ordered a Benchmade Mini Griptillian(Studs not holes) in it. Since I started pocket carrying strong side, I have trouble working the Delica weak side. The left hand don't like the Spidey Holes.
