Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
So i actuallly have wet stones which I bought andbhave sharpened knives with. I tried it on this one and nothing. If you can see, the blade is coated in whatever that is and the blade profile is more outwardly curved, not razor thin like kitchen knife.
Also with knife sharpener (people) can i grab their contact info?

I can knock the flat edge off, but can't get one really sharp. It's easy to get it soso, not so much to get a great edge. There's a art to it. My dad and grandpa had it, I don't. At least yet...haha
Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
I bought the Work Sharp based on recommendations here. After a little practice I can get edges sharp enough to slice a sheet of paper with no effort. Thats sharp enough for me.

I learned to sharpen knives when I was cutting meat in college, and I do a passable job at it using oil stones and/or diamond-impregnated plates.Niceguy wrote:I can knock the flat edge off, but can't get one really sharp. But I *hate* many "modern" knives renowned for edge-holding ability. All the "powdered crucible steel" voodoo aside, these knives are just too damn hard. Yes, they'll hold an edge, but if you ever let them get really dull...God help you. I own exactly one such "custom" knife, and I'll never own another.
Our dads and grandads used knives that were *intended* to be sharpened by the user...as do I. It doesn't bother me in the slightest to have to sharpen my daily-carry knife every few months.

I have knives of my dad's and granddad's that the blades are over half gone. They both seemed to have a thing for Schrades, Old Timers, and Case. I have dozens of them...haha

Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
Frailer makes very legitimate point....
Older knives are much easier to sharpen.
For these "newer" or custom knives, it takes a lot more work.
IMO, it's best to start with coarse stone and work your way down... it can take a while

Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
If your going to own a knife, you best learn how to put a razor edge on it!
There are all sorts of ways , methods, types of sharpeners, but the mechanics are all the same. Look around , watch a bunch of youtube vids, and practice.
There are all sorts of tips and tricks that we could all tell ya, but the truth is PRACTICE! Practice , Practice! My one tip is always strop the blade on leather to finish , some times you will think its not that sharp and a bit of stropping makes it SCARY SHARP!
if you really want to send it to me , ill sharpen it but I would much rather you learn to fish.

Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
Im worried ill make the rounded edge into a brittle knife sharp edge? Make any sense?
Make the concave into a straight slope. Trust me, id sharpen it myself if i could but i felt like i was ruining the blade.

Re: Knife sharpener Louisville
Scared to ruin a blade? Start with cheap knife to get the technique down. Maintaining your own edge is a must if you own a quality blade. Expensive systems are not always better, I use 220, 400, 600, 1000 and 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper on a machined flat table ( table saw wing ) then buffing wheel on grinder and get amazing results.

Yea. And yes Ihave used a cheap blade, turns out a $15 sharpener got my kitchen knife far sharper than 30 min of sweating it out. But again, I cant find a cheap curved edge knife. To answer your actual question Heimerdingers Cutlery on Shelbyville road at Hubbards lane does knife sharpening. Carl is pretty good at it. Does a nice job for less than 10 bucks . Takes about a week though.

These are great. Use it to sharpen the lawn mower blade also. Haven't figured out how to to a chain saw with it yet.Dave1965 wrote:I bought the Work Sharp based on recommendations here.
