Best knife sharpener for beginners to moderate enthusiasts
I need a knife sharpener for my folders that are fairly expensive and can't have them getting messed up by trying to maintain them. I like the spyderco with the rods to sharpen with I seen online in you tube videos. I want really sharp knives and want to be hands on in maintaining them. All suggestions appreciated.

In for replies from the professionals. FWIW, I use the Smiths pocket pal. Usually just the ceramic side of it.

Re: Best knife sharpener for beginners to moderate enthusias
Man there is a whole lot on this subject that could be said.
I dont favor the lansky sharpener though many people do like them and use them well.
I prefer a convex final edge, the edge will last longer and get VERY sharp. Its very simple the method starts with various grits of automotive sandpaper. 400 grit,600 grit, 800 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit , 2000 grit, leather and a mouse pad.
Lay the course grit sandpaper on the mouse pad and sharpen the same way you would a stone only pulling the edge and not pushing it(aka dont try to cut in to the sand paper) work you way up the grits untill you are at 2000 , that will make the knife sharper then most here figured possible, beyond that you can use a brown paper bag , and finally white paper at 60,000 micron to make the edge STUPID sharp.
Its not so important how you sharpen, but it is very important that you understand what your trying to do.

I have 3 diamond plates I use coarse, medium, fine that seem to work pretty well.

I'll probably get laughed at by the hardcore folks but I bought a 5 dollar ceramic sharpener with 2 small sticks in a V configuration. Just pull the knife through it a few times and good to go. Keeps my knives happily sharp. The Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker is on my git list.

Re: Best knife sharpener for beginners to moderate enthusias
I use a couple different stones then use sand paper (600/800 grit) then finish with an old leather belt...
This is the only thing I can get to actually sharpen a knife good...I've tried all kinds of those pull thru sharpeners etc with no real luck....sure they make some that work well, but I havent found one....
Practice on an older knife or el cheapo that u dont mind hurting....doesn't take long to figure it out and ot doesn't take long to get one good and sharp....I get mine sharp enough to shave hair on my arm and its GTG...

If I am just maintaining the knife and not trying to bring it back from full on dull I just use a ceramic stick sharpener...

I have one from Gerber and it sucks. I saw a trick to make sure your angles are good by using a permanent marker and color the edge so you can see if you are getting it right and the pull through thing doesn't on my Kershaw.KYgundude wrote:I'll probably get laughed at by the hardcore folks but I bought a 5 dollar ceramic sharpener with 2 small sticks in a V configuration. Re: Best knife sharpener for beginners to moderate enthusias
My Papaw taught me how to sharpen a knife on a whetstone. I do pretty good with that, but usually reserve that method for my Traditional pocket knives.
I do have a Lansky I bought years ago. It is good for what it is, but is time consuming. My One Hand Openers are usally sharpened with it.
Most of my belt knives and the such are sharpened with the mouse pad/sandpaper convexed method. My Khukuri's and machete's are convexed, too, but I use a belt sander for the machete's.
