Case knife set!

Post by icehouse1 » Sun Jan 12, 2014 10:21 am

My father passed away a few years back and I was given this set of knives that he cherished. Can anyone tell me anything about them? Value? I have looked all over the web and can not find another set, made up like this, anywhere.

I can help if you can get me an upclose shot of the tang stamp.

Just from what I can see they are all #5 (stag handle) and it looks as if maybe a set of 1 of each pattern from that year.

If you are in the Louisville area there is a gentleman that sets up inside at the Shepherdsville (awesome) flea market that can tell you more about them..

My camera will not zoom in that close. I did write down the following off of the blade of the middle knife on the left:
Case XX
5172 SSP

Hand Made USA
. . . .

Is the S in case a normal s or a lightning s? Ah there are just too many variables, the tang is how the knife is dated and they just change something small each time.. From your description it sounds as if it could be a 1976 but I would have to see the stamp to be sure...

IF and I mean if it is a 1976 5172 SSP in mint condition the book value is $175 in Jim parkers last book from 2010 right before he died. (I don't have any updated books unfortunately because I don't know another good one to trust on value yet)

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but wouldn't all of this be worth more as the "Dealer Set"?

Not a stupid question at all. and yes it will be worth more if all tangs match and all are same date.. The parker guide doesn't cover dealer sets, your best bet would be to contact case directly. I have called them a few times over the years and they are very helpful determining things like that..

I am not a knife dealer or a expert but I would not be afried of asking 1200.00 as a minimum at retail in my shop.

Cranky there is a WHOLE LOT more value there. 1 knife is $175...

Icehouse if you want to, send me a list of the model #'s (like the 5172) and let me know if they are all 4 dot and I will give you the "blue book" values on them until you can find more info from an older dealer or someone more knowledgeable (I have only been dealing knives since 06' so only have a few years under my belt)..

11x 175.00= 1925
Notice I said minimum retail in a gun shop
Not the value of the set BIC C :llama:

Icehouse I would suggest you get a written apprasil for the value of your collection.
I tell you what , you get BigC the info and when you get your lower, set you up
With a written apprasil from my letterhead.
Plus I have a camera that can take real close pictures :-)

Sounds good.. I want to make sure that I have enough insurance to cover my firearms, paintball gear and the knives in my plan.

Thanks... To you both..

This is a good idea. I should look into this myself.
