SOL or Netto would be your go to guys here. Interested in what you decide because I've shopped both of those and the Fiskars axe this week.

Well worth the premium, Grandsfors Bruks is top of the line. I had the small forest axe and made the mistake of letting it go but it was one of the nicest I have had... Wetterlings would be another good choice IMHO..

Look at the husqvarnsa axe for about 20% less, good value for the money. One of the best values is an old axe to restore. You can pick up a good axe for $3-$20 at a flea market to restore. My best/favorite axe I picked up for $1.

GB are great I cant really say much bad about them, though I dont think they are work the cost for my use. If I was a wood carver and required the very best tool, ya GB axe, 2 cherries chisels , water stones, and so on. The nature of my work is much more abusive , often im cutting dirty muddy wood, using a less then ideal chopping block, smashing rocks , im abusing it much more then im planing a bow or skinning an animal with it. I dont want to be afraid to take a file to it, to grind it sharp on a rock, dig a shit hole. If im going to work a nice wood project I just sharpen it and put a real keen edge on it at that point and as long as it completes the project I realyl dont care if its hair popping sharp after that.

For a me a decent axe head, hand carved handle"Osage" , the final 1 inch of edge polished to a mirror finish, and a decent sheath is a tool well up to my use.

Have I helped you ......not really

Would I like to get a GB axe as a gift......sure beats the hell out of socks....lol

I think it's worth the extra money, because of the craftsmanship and materials used to make the axe. It's just a really quality tool. And I beat the crap out of it... And it handles it just fine.

That being said, I've had no issues with council tool either though. I haven't beat on those like I have my Gransfors though... So I guess I don't have a definitive opinion on those.

"I know it's an old thread, but maybe it will be a timely resurrection for someone, my choise it's Fiskars Chopping Axe like this . It's very comfortable in work, so I work with them a lot. The axe is suitable for felling trees thanks to beneficial weight distribution and innovative blade geometry.
If we speak about cons it's: great weight distribution, shock-absorbing handle, weather-resistant handle material, sharp blade edge, it feels durable and lightweight, affordable price.
Of course there are a lot of other good axe but i liked this.
